Blackstrap Molasses
Posted Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 1:43 PM
I love blackstrap molasses with hot water and a little unsweetened soy milk instead of tea or coffee in the morning. I started drinking it to boost my iron levels, but really love it. It is high in calcium, copper and other minerals. But, I'm wondering what the verdict is on blackstrap molasses since it is a little sweet. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

i have noticed that the engine 2 book has a few recipes with blackstrap in them. You might want to check out that book if you haven't already.

I add blackstrap molasses to a variety of recipes (even when it isn't called for) just for the mineral boost. I think as long as you are not drinking cups of it (I'd like to meet the person that could stomach that challenge) then you are fine.

Thanks for the post about blackstrap molasses. I never thought of making a "tea" from it. Sounds yummy!

I don't use "sweeteners" for anything. Is this something I should consider as an additional iron source? According to my last physical, I'm not deficient by any means, but I'm 58... Where does one find it in the market, and if I'm not using it as a sweetener, should I just take some every day? I'm not a sweet type person! Buy about 8 oz. of carob for a treat and that can last 3-4 mos! Add it to my pumpkin seeds occasionally. I take them to work for a snack some days (roasted/salted, but I put in a screen colander and shake off 99% of the salt. Figure the canola oil is ok). Thanks!

If you have been through menopause, then you needn't supplement with iron. In fact, it can be quite dangerous to take extra iron unless you are losing blood on a regular basis.

Thanks for letting us know about not needing to take iron after menopause. Very helpful!

SO glad to have survived menopause! (Never had cramps or PMS but during peri found I had hypothyrodism. Thank GOODNESS for that diagnosis!) Thanks for the info! Guess I don't need this stuff since I have no use for sweetener, not to mention that my last checkup showed I was fine with my iron level.

We prefer to buy organic, unsulphured molasses and evaporated cane juice and just use the two in recipes that call for brown sugar. Even my 12 yr old has come to prefer the richer flavor of cookies and such baked with molasses to the rather bland taste of commercial "brown sugar". We don't use near enough for it to be a 'hazardous' amount of iron by any means (nowhere near daily). --Deb R
