Weight Loss Plan?
Posted Monday, March 7, 2011 at 1:14 PM

I've been following the kickstart since September, mainly to eat healthier, but I also need to lose weight. I am really struggling with weight loss on this plan. Does anyone know if there is a vegan diet meal plan for weight loss with specific amounts of foods to eat?

I know we are suppose to eat until full, but that is not working for weight loss for me. I think I am wanting something a bit more structured at the moment. I'd appreciate any suggestions!

I'd like to also endorse the meal plan that Carol suggested, but also suggest another from Dr. McDougall. His "Maximum Weight Loss" plan is amazing, and will allow just about anyone to lose a large quantity of weight in a fairly short period of time, assuming you follow the plan. McDougall really knows his stuff. Smile

The plan is on his website for free. Does MWL program have to be purchased?

I don't know for sure. I have only seen it in a book. It's for people wanting the most dramatic results. I found a copy at Half-Price Books for about $9, I think.

Shadowheart,

I have the same problem i.e. lack of weight loss so you are not alone - although I have only been vegan since the January kickstart. I think my problems relate to not being low fat (or not enough - some meals are, some aren't)and portion control.

I had a quick look at the McDougall 12-day program and can see the difference in what he advises compared to what I am currently doing. I need to loose all vegetable oils and spreads and stay away from any processed products including vegan 'meat' replacement products. The last kickstart was for health and to learn to eat vegan but part of being healthy for me is loss of excess weight. So at the next kickstart I will concentrate on weight loss. I think I might get Dr McDougalls book and read between now and then for some additional information.

As a side note, with the price of food rising here the more things I loose from my regular shopping list the better.

The first kickstart, I did to get the hang of vegan eating. The second one, I aimed for lowering the fat. This next one is going to be watching portions a little better.

However, as this is getting to be more of a habit, I'm seeing slow, steady weight loss of 1/2 lb to 1 lb per week as long as I keep on with it (and exercising and such). I figure it took me decades to add it all on, I can give it a year to come back off again.

We've noticed, too, that the more we make from scratch ingredients, the further the food budget goes. All the processing and packaging adds to the cost of prepared/"Convenience" foods. Yes, it takes more time but it pays off in multiple areas - better quality/fresh foods, save cash, less trash to haul to the curb.

Thanks for all the good info everyone. I decided to order the Maximum Weight Loss book and see if that gets my weight loss moving. I'm sure it is portion control and eating to many grains/rice which is causing the problem for me. So, hoping by following a specific plan prior to the next kickstart, I will see and understand better the portion size I need for loss.

I'll still be cooking the grains/rice/breads for the family, so it will take will power on my part too! I've noticed the husband bringing home to many junk food items with cheese and some meat products, so I need to get back on a plan with more variety for him!

I've only just started to read it, but Dr. Barnard's newest book is titled, "21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart," so presumably there is some weight loss information in there as well!!!!

Just want to remind everyone who posted to this to make sure (if you aren't) to do the fiber count. I found that as Dr. Barnard says, if I eat enough fiber every day, the portion control takes care of itself. It's those days I don't eat the beans and oatmeal that I tend to overeat.

Dr. Barnard did mention maximum portions in his book about Reversing Diabetes.

I know I've lost about 30 lbs. since I started -- still have a lot to go, but I'm headed in the right direction and I don't feel deprivedSmile

Thanks for the reminder. When I think about it, my problem is probably as simple as that. I have oatmeal for breakfast each morning but am very inconsistent about the beans. That may be why I loose 2 lbs one week then put it back on the next so stay the same weight overall. More fibre coming up....

We're pretty good on beans (beans, beans they're good for your heart, the more you eat... :lolSmile but it's other stuff that I'm just getting to sorting out which have more fiber - yeah, I can take a LONG time at the grocery store, comparing boxes of pasta and cereal! Not to mention lots of whole fruits and veggies.

Tonight I think we're going to be having homemade "hot pockets" - whole wheat pizza like dough, broccoli and not-cheese sauce all baked up nice and tasty.
