Fat confusion setting in - again
Posted Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 8:29 PM

Ok..I've been really working hard at becoming far more conscious of the added fat in my food. I thought I understood the effects of consuming added fat (even "good" fat) on my body, including the negative effect on my diabetes. I am reading Joel Fuhrman's book (Eat to Live) and had an "Aha" moment on page 42 where he explains about the misconceptions around the Mediterranean diet (a diet most of us likely heard was a good one to emulate).

Today, I received a newsletter in the mail called "Environmental Nutrition", edited/written by not one but TEN registered dieticians (with Masters or doctorate degrees behind their names) who tell me in this issue that "fat free" salad dressings don't provide the fat required to help absorb fat-soluble nutrients; that I need fish oil to get the DHA and EPA not found in other omega-3 sources like flax, walnuts etc. (they contain ALA which converts to EPA which then converts to DHA but is not efficient and less than 10% ends up as EPA) and that "new evidence suggests that the Mediterranean-style diet is linked with weight loss" because of "moderate" amounts of monounsaturated fats. ARRRRRRGGH!!!!!

Has anyone heard of this newsletter (that is "celebrating 33 years")? Why is there is so much conflicting and contradictory information "out there"????

It appears to me that health might just be a bit of a crap shoot after all. I'm feeling frustrated today.

I am going to give you a really simple AND really complex answer. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY ! It is really that simple and really that complex. Get rid of the fat for a month, then add it back. You won't need any other evidence.

I think...and I say that this is what I think...the food industry, diet industry, doctors and publishers want to tell us what, how, when, and whatever to eat. I too think you need to do what is right for you. What makes you feel good, ( and I don't mean chocolate and mac & cheese.)
I was trying so hard to listen to everyone and every idea seemed to be the magic bullet but in the end I didn't feel good. I was consumed with food and thinking of food all the time. I had some outside help. And she told me that I was in charge of my body and what went into it. If I wanted to buy every book that came out I'd be driving myself crazy, and I was. And I still didn't know what to do. I came back to the 21 day Kickstart and started listening to things that I knew already. (I had been vegan before.) But now I have the power and I know I feel better, sleep better, have more energy, and my whole system works better.
Quit driving yourself nuts and do what you need to do for you. Hope to see you here in September for the next 21 day. It will be my 3rd time here and I can't wait. Very Happy

As a dietitian, who also earned a masters in nutrition, I can say on pretty good authority that what RDs are taught in school is right along the party line. People, even dietitians, tend to question very little about the information presented. We trust our professors. And why shouldn't we? But they too were taught along the party line. It's a bit of a viscous cycle.

Now that all I do is live and breathe scientific journals, I promise you, keeping all fats very low proves beneficial over and over again. BUT, I agree with everyone else. You have to see for yourself what works best. This is what Dr. Barnard calls a scientific study of one. And nothing else is as convincing.

Thanks, Susan. I really love how PCRM as an org--and you in particular!--tell it like it is with regard to the way the medical education system works. (Having a MA in a totally unrelated field, I can say orthodoxy and party-line thinking is pretty much just an academic epidemic.) Anyway, I think this can only improve!

I would just like to add that there are vegan DHAs available, sourced from microalgae (which is where the fish get it). If you are tested and find you are one of those people who does not adequately convert, that's an option for you. Spectrum makes one (called "vegetarian DHA" but vegan), and there are others. Just avoid the ones marketed as "prenatal" as they are more expensive, but the same dang thing.

Thanks for the pep talk, everyone! I think I was just cranky yesterday and had a rant and rave before thinking things through. Shoulda had a cuppa tea first before logging on to the forum. Very Happy

Last night I continued to read Dr. Fuhrman's book, and as as Wild4Stars suggested, listened to what "felt" right. (which is a bit dangerous at times because at one time South Beach "felt" right too..yowza) Anyway, I am returning to the low-fat/no-fat fold with confidence that it's the right thing for me.

Susan, I actually felt angry at the writers of the newsletter because the information just flew in the face of what it appears the facts are. Dr. Fuhrman's book goes so far as to say that the government actually participates in knowingly misleading the tax-paying public by throwing billions to subsidize meat and dairy industries on the one hand, and then sucking more money out of our pockets to pay medical bills for diseases caused by obesity and other completely preventable illnesses directly related to those same industries. Gawd! Someone stop the madness!

Clearly, I'm one of those people who needs to be hit over the head with facts til they finally sink in (some resistance to change, no doubt). It's also true that there's a bit of a disconnect between my mind and my body, so yes, I will start to listen more intently and to observe the changes, tweaking and improving as I follow the yellow brick road to lasting good health.

Cheers, all!
