Peanut Cravings
Posted Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 3:52 PM

I've been a vegan for almost three years and abstain from refined grains and sugars. Unfortunately, over the past six months I've had irresistable cravings for peanuts, peanut butter, and dried fruits like dates, prunes, and raisins. As a result of indulging these cravings, I've put on some weight. How do I get rid of these cravings?

Well, I'm not sure if peanut butter is totally forbidden on the Kickstart. I think the most important thing is that you choose the low-fat varieties, and maybe low-sodium as well.

It's possible that peanut butter is forbidden. Although I'm sure I've seen it some of the recipes. I think it's just something to be limited not necessarily eliminated. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. Wrong about this, that is.

Thanks for the reply, Theodore. From what I've read, it is recommended to limit nuts to condiments since it is easy to overindulge in them. Unfortunately, I must completely abstain from peanuts since I seem to turn them into heroin and end up eating much more than just a modest handful. (Strangely, I can easily moderate my walnut consumption.) I can fill up on vegetables to where I'm not hungry, but I still crave peanuts and carbs even after consuming small servings of walnuts with my oatmeal breakfast and dinner salad -- weird.

I do eat nuts on occasion. But I find that I usually can't eat them alone. If I do, I tend to want to eat more. So I always make sure it's with something else. I sprinkle a few chopped tamari almonds over the top of a plate of veggies and brown rice for example. And I always measure my nuts. 'Cause if I were mindless about it, I could eat a whole lot of them.

What about making a veggie stir fry with a lower fat peanut sauce? Then you get a whole meal full of that peanuty taste and the veggies fill you up leaving you satisfied rather than wanting more.

That's a great idea, Greenish. I'll try it next time the cravings start.

Something that seems to be effective when I'm wanting nuts, peanuts especially, is to lightly (VERY lightly) salt some cooked chickpeas - the taste and texture approaches eating a handful of peanuts without the fat.

However, sometimes when I start wanting nuts, I have a small bit of nuts. I evaluate what I've been eating and sometimes that nut craving is because I've had lots of low fat veg and not much in the way of either protein or the little bit of fat needed.
