Salad Dressing
Posted Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at 1:28 AM
Any suggestions for low fat or fat free salad dressings? I usually drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil with some lemon juice or rice rice vinegar. Sometimes I'll add garlic to the olive oil, but I'd love to hear what others do for dressings. Any fat free low sugar (or no added sugar) ideas would be helpful. Thanks!

I have several that I like but one that I use frequently is Maple Grove Farms of Vermont Fat Free Balsamic Vinaigrette. It does have sugar, but it's the last ingredient. They have some other Fat Free flavors too, I don't happen to have any in the house to give exact names, but one has wasabi in it, I like it on sandwiches or wraps. There's a Raspberry Vinaigrette. There's a Dijon that I found a bit sweet, but others might like it. I haven't tried it since becoming vegan so be sure to read the ingredients. Whole Foods produce section has a brand called Cindy's Kitchen that also has a balsamic vinaigrette that's very good. There's a couple other fat free flavors, I haven't really looked at the sugar. I just recently discoverd this brand so not familiar with all the fat free flavors. Most vegan cookbooks have at least a couple really easy, fat free dressings. I've made one that is balsamic vinegar, fresh garlic, spicy mustard (or your favorite mustard) and maple syrup. Blend with a whip. Adjust the amounts to your own taste, it's pretty good. I'm not much on sweet dressings so I use very little, sometimes no syrup.

We've also, for a creamier textured dressing, used pureed white beans (navy/northern) with some cider vinegar, agave and mustard as a mayo-like base and then added to that to make ranch-like dressing without the fat or dairy. --Deb R

I make a fat-free vegan tofu mayonnaise and also a vegan fat-free sour cream (you can find multiple recipes for either online) and use those for the base of creamy fat-free dressings. The other day I made one on the fly using fat-free mayo, lemon juice, Old Bay seasoning and a pinch of raw sugar. It was for a "seafood" pasta salad and it turned out delicious. Another option we really enjoy is seasoned rice vinegar.

I use the Walden Farms brand dressings. They are calorie-free, fat-free, (most are gluten-free), and carbohydrate-free. They're available from netrition.com and at Sprouts stores, as well as at some Kroger's. I've loved them for years. Also, Dr. Fuhrman has some good fruit-based recipes for dressings, though they're not low-sugar, since they use fruit.

Caveat: I just checked and they use Splenda (sucralose) in the salad dressings (I checked several varieties to see if it was global or just one or two flavors). So, if you prefer to avoid artificial sweeteners or, like me and hubby, have a negative reaction to them, be aware that these might not be your best choice. Now back to your regular programming...LOL --Deb R

Thanks so much for all your suggestions! They sound great. I will look to see what brand our stores here sell. I'm not close to a whole foods, but I'm lucky to be in an area where vegan is popular and we have a great (but expensive) store and some wonderful vegan restaurants here. I guess this is all a learning process as you go.
