Report from my annual physical
Posted Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 12:59 PM
So after 11 weeks eating a completely plant-based diet, I had a doctor's appointment. To say the doctor was pleased would be an understatement. Weight loss - over 25 pounds Blood pressure - 110/70 Cholesterol - 147 Triglycerides - 155 HDL - 38 LDL - 78 Blood sugar and A1C which were borderline last year are now well within normal range. I am coming off the cholesterol medication and she is cutting my blood pressure medication in half. She wants to see me in another 4 months to check my blood pressure again and see whether I should come off the blood pressure meds entirely. It's mind boggling. Just 11 weeks.

That's excellent!! i have had similar results.. my choresterol is so low we are stopping meds for 6 weeks and retesting... that says something since they were close to 400 without meds before. All my other numbers were good like yours too.. i did have one lady come into the library today who used to be vegan. .. she now eats meat because her iron went too low.. she was on supplements 2x a day and they remained low.. so her doc told her to eat beef 2-3x a week.. does that sound right.. i would be devestated if that happened to me.. the very last thing in the world i want to eat is meat of any kind. i would truely be distraught.

I must admit I am a bit envious, my cholesterol (last check in October) was still over 200 and my weight has not changed for the better since I have been down south. Staying vegan is not an issue, just seem to stay a high cholesteroled pudge!

I don't take any medications. The doctor felt my diet was so good, that what I needed to do was just lose the weight. Just. JUST. Riiiight. I used to be thin until my leg injuries and now I just can't seem to get it off.

As far as I'm aware, the only circumstance in which a doctor should recommend eating beef is if the patient has a proven medical need to hear some b/s. Whether that applies to this lady's case, I have no idea. Theodore

Each to their own but I couldn't/wouldn't go back to eating beef or any meat for that matter. My iron got really low lst year (haemoglobin, iron and iron stores) due to excessive menstral problems that had nothing to do with being vegan although people tend to blame diet first when they hear you dont eat meat. My doctor kept me on iron supplements for 6-months(iron and vit c together as iron is absorbed better when taken with vit c). I was happy to take the supplements and they worked. My doc is aware of my diet preferences and while he may not totally agree and would not choose that for himself, he is happy to support the choices I make. So no prescription to eat meat.

If my doctor suggested I eat beef I would get a new doctor.

No misunderstading on my part Theodore. I picked up the B/S prescription right away. Only you would come up with that I think they call it the placebo effect in some circles. I guess I was trying to say the B/S wouldn't work on me. I can however picture some doc getting carried away with his/her own importance and believing the B/S prescription should be for real
