I have been on the 21 day quick start for 10 days and am experiencing "gastric distress". Anyone have a comment? Thanks

This will pass ... literally. I think there are a couple of other threads that address this issue. Basically, introduce beans and other gassy foods gradually. If you are using canned beans, rinse them first. Try Beano if you need more help.

If you were eating the typical SAD diet for a long time your colon is used to the way it has been moving for all of those years. The sudden increase in fiber is a bit of a shock to it and as the other poster said it will "pass". Beano is helpful (although it is not vegan), drinking extra water, exercising, drinking fennel tea or taking fennel capsules help as well. It will settle down once your body adjusts. Also some foods are more gas causing than others so maybe limit those for a while until you adjust. Everyone is different on which cause gas for them but the most common are of course broccoli (raw is fine for me it is the cooked), cauliflower, artichoke, and of course beans (including soy). If soy is a problem switch to rice if using it as a milk. Good luck Kim

That's all definitely good advice. I've been lacto-ovo for 20 years now and when I did the January kickstart, the first week went great, but somewhere during the second week things went to heck - I even learned I have diverticulosis (which flared up into diverticulitis). I think, for me, the issue was increasing my fiber (beans and whole grains) so much, but not getting in enough fruit, greens and WATER. (I'm still working on my Dr. Pepper problem) I'd like to repeat the part about rinsing the beans. That weird bean-foam contains hard to digest sugars that come loose after a little cooking. Even when I buy dried beans I rinse, soak, boil for 10-20 minutes, rinse again, and then add onions, etc and boil until done. Some people don't do that second rinsing part - the lady at this website has some pretty good tips for beans: http://www.kitchentablemedicine.com/how-to-better-digest-beans/

I use a little bit of baking soda in vegan chili and other dishes I cook. It seems to help with the gas.

For me it is whole wheat/gluten that was giving me the gas. My system does better with "cooked" veggies. Start becoming aware when you have the gas and what you ate before hand. Keep a food diary for awhile and you might be able to figure out what's causing it. I'm going to get Dr. Neal Barnard's Book "Foods that Fight Pain" he has an elimination diet that will also help you discover which foods are bothering you. I'm thinking that soy and maybe corn are bothering me too?

Dr. Fuhrman explains this gassy discomfort as being a lack of the right beneficial bacteria in your gut. Eating beans and higher fiber will be a little uncomfortable at first when you transition from a lower-fiber diet, but the more you do it, the more your digestive system will adjust, becoming a more inviting place to the bacteria you need. He also says not to take Beano, because it interferes/delays with this natural balancing process. Rinse canned beans, cook dried beans thoroughly in fresh water (not the soaking water), start slow and work your way up.

Now when we go out to eat she takes 8-12 Lactaid, or 4 for each course. (I often wonder why she doesn't just give it up, but I know how hard it has been for me and I had a lot more variety to my diet.) What I wonder even more often than that, is if she's actually consuming more enzymes than it takes to digest the food. It hadn't occurred to me that the supplements could have thrown off her balance to that point.
