I made the Vegetarian Swiss Steak from the 21-days menu plan last night. Does seitan get better with familiarity? The veggies were fine but really had trouble with the seitan. For one thing it looks way too much like meat. Let me know of other ways people fix it even though I doubt if I'll use it again. Crying or Very sad

Honestly, seitan looks so much like meat (texture too) that I can't normally eat it. The only times I've enjoyed it were at fancy vegan restaurants where the experts slather it in sauce (usually BBQ) and serve it in small amounts.

I sympathize. Don't force it.

I also tried seitan for the first time recently and thought I was given a (rare) roast beef sandwich at a vegan affair.

I didn't make the swiss steak recipe (yet) but might give it a try. Ordinarily, I just prefer beans...and more beans. Very Happy

There's no reason to eat anything you don't like. We love seitan around here, but then none of us is grossed out by meat. Still, it's a processed food with nothing in it that you can't get from other foods, so I say skip it if you don't like it.

I've only had it once, it was small pieces in an Asian dish and it was quite good. But to be honest the dish would have likely been good with or without the seitan. I've never cooked it myself, might try it sometime just to see what it's like. I really try to focus on "greens and beans" and unprocessed foods as much as possible. I primarily follow the "Eat To Live" concept as presented in the book by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. Emphasis is on nutrient density.

I made the swiss steak too. It was not very good. I liked the tomoatoes and all but the seitan was not very good and I have not been motivated to try anything else with it. Unless, of course, someone has some great receipe that they would recommend.

I was planning on making the swiss gravy recipe this week, but now that I read this thread I'm thinking I should check the Veganomicon for some other ideas. Its shelf life's about up so I gotta try it somehow.

Also, Shanna, I'm with you on the Gardein! I tried their southwestern stuffed whatever, and it was way too chicken like for my tastes. (and this from a quorn pattie lover - if only those were vegan!)
