Eating nuts regularly?
Posted Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at 10:14 PM
What about eating nuts regularly? I eat walnuts (around 10-12) everyday as a afternoon snack. Having read the numerous benefits of nuts, I decided to incorporate it in my diet. Also, I am quite active. I exercise regularly 5 times a week, also daily household work keeps me busy. I haven't noticed any weight gain since I started including nuts in my diet. So would it be fair to continue eating them as long as I don't over do it? Also, I remember reading somewhere that actually eating nuts regularly can actually help you to keep your weight in check. I really think this claim must hold some truth to some extent. What are your thoughts? P.S: Sorry, if some one has already asked this question but I have been out of picture for quite a few days. Thank you very much!!! Cheers Minotee

I'm nuts about nuts (and seeds) so, despite their high fat content, I do eat nuts almost daily. Like you, I do monitor the amount I eat though, but truly, nuts are the only small snack that can keep me feeling sated until the next meal. I suspect it is also the goodness of the wee nut that keeps my HDL numbers perfecto. Well..that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I eat an ounce of Brazil nuts almost every day. Sometimes I switch to hazelnuts, but mostly Brazil nuts. I buy raw, organic at Whole Foods. Nuts are packed with good things for you. But they are very high in fat and calories. I weight them out in 1 ounce servings so I don't over eat them.

As long as you are good at limiting the amount. A dietitian friend always puts it this way, "There is a reason why nuts come in a shell." Think about how our ancestors had to crack each walnut shell to get to the goods. There was no bulk aisle at the store. That thought always put into perspective for me how much we should limit intake of nuts. Again, if weight or chronic disease symptoms are an issue, I would really think about avoiding nuts as much as possible.

I am trying to lose weight, so I avoid nuts as much as possible. I had to ditch the nut butters because I cannot be controlled around them! So, very few nuts for me. But occasionally I will add a small amount of walnuts to my oatmeal. I will also sometimes sprinkle sunflower or pumpkin seeds on a salad.

We avoid walnuts because, though he says he's not allergic, they make hubby's mouth itchy (his description). Instead, we use pecans for a similar taste/texture when needed. I like to add pecans to my oatmeal and we like sunflower seeds and pumpkins seeds as well. It was fun growing our own pumpkins and sunflowers this past summer and then toasting them ourselves as we chose. Also, if you slightly salt and slightly overcook the pumpkin seeds (barely burnt, not destroyed) they have a taste and texture very much like bacon bits for salad. It was a fortuitious accident that we discovered that. Don't do it often because of the saltiness involved but it's nice to know we can have that texture/flavor profile on occasion if we want it. --Deb R

My son can't eat walnuts either ... he gets the same itchy mouth thing. He also gets that from apple skins and other fruit peels.

I'm going to try that next time I have some fresh pumpkin seeds on hand.
