Sleepy & No Energy
Posted Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 5:30 PM

I've been eating vegan for about 5 weeks now and losing about 1 to 1-1/2 lbs a week. I've been really pleased except lately I've been rather tired and have no energy. Could this be connected to something missing in my diet? Anyone else experiencing this?

After five weeks, you should feel pretty energetic and awake eating a healthful vegan diet. Maybe you should think about the timing of the foods you are eating or perhaps the types of foods. Could you mix it up a little bit? Smaller meals more often if you tend to eat fewer large meals?

First, consider other factors that might affect energy besides diet such as restful sleep, exercise, stress, weather, etc.

Me too been feeling somewhat sluggish although I'm not really sure if it's because of the food or other factors (had a recent trip, maybe I was tired from travelling).

For me, I found I experienced sluggishness and tiredness when I ate too many grain-based foods (some are ok, but not a whole lot), and too many fruits, or too many processed foods. Eating too many of those foods was leaving me with low blood sugar, which made me tired all the time. I had to rebalance my diet to include way more fresh vegetables and non-grain complex carbohydrates (like beans, sweet potatoes, etc.), as well as *some* healthy fats.

Molly, I think you hit it right on the nail for me. I seem to have trouble with too many carbs even if they are complex. If I get on a simple carb kick, I'm in serious trouble. But I do tend to feel "heavier" if I eat a lot of complex carbs, rice, quinoa, etc. I guess I didn't realize sweet potatos are considered complex carbs... I'll have to stick with them and I would assume squash comes into that category!! Kind of a light bulb moment there!!
