Exercise Program
Posted Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 10:58 AM
I am new to exercising on a regular basis. I have oh, half my body-weight to lose to get to my goal in the distant future. Here is what I do, starting this week: 30-minutes on the elliptical. I usually do 3-miles with an average heart-rate of 150 with different elevations. I don't want to put in my weight, so I never know how many calories I burn. I will check next time. 30-minutes strength training. I do the 10-8-6 method where I do 10 reps then move to the corresponding machine and do 10. Then 8 and then 6. So it comes out to 3 sets with 10-8-6 reps. I enjoy it. Oh, and I do Zumba on Tuesday nights because it's convenient and free on campus. I love the cycling machines too. I feel lazy when I'm not at the gym, even if I have worked out that morning. I have so much energy and have almost a caffeine-like high most of the day since becoming vegan. It's great, but is there anything else I can do?

I would gently suggest that you stick with what you're doing for several weeks before adding anything else. It takes a bit of time to make anything a habit (that's why the kickstart is 21 days - that's habit making time). Once what you're doing becomes habit, then look at what you're doing, what works and what maybe doesn't work as well over time. If you're doing aerobic/cardio and weight, that's a good basis to work from. --Deb R

My biggest problem is that I am not exercising. I would have to do it before 6 a.m. and I cannot rouse myself to do it when it is cold and snowy outside. I really need to give myself a swift kick in the rear.

I really need to give myself a swift kick in the rear. I hear ya with that! That's why we have a treadmill in the basement (finished space, has a TV/DVD)and recumbent exercise bike in the living room - no excuses for cold, dark, raining, etc. It's climate controlled and I can watch my favorite TV shows or a movie while I walk/ride. And, I've got a live-in butt-kicker If it gets to after dinner and I haven't made a move to get on the treadmill or bike, hubby will say "Aren't you going to walk today?" and I have to come face to face with it, can't just let it slide or 'forget'. Of course, the reverse is true as well - if he hasn't gotten moving, I bring it up "did you walk today?" Lately, though, he's been getting his exercise clearing the snow and slush from the driveway - snowblower, shovelling, sanding, etc. --Deb R

Unfortunately, our basement is not climate-controlled; it's a typical concrete basement, complete with washer, dryer, boiler, and hot water heater. My husband does get up early and exercise down there - he has one of those Chuck Norris contraptions. My goal is to clean out a space down there for me and put the exercise bike my dad gave me down there, with a tv and a DVD player. But I haven't done that yet ...

Well, by 'climate controlled' I don't mean we've got heat or a/c - we don't have a/c anywhere in the house and we try not to use the space heater in the basement because it spikes the electric bill (we do have one by the washer/dryer area that has a frost setting to keep pipes from freezing but that goes on and off as needed, doesn't stay on for long stretches). But, it's not windy, rainy, snowy, icy. It's usually a bit cooler than outside in summer, a bit warmer than outside in winter.--Deb R

I started regular exercise in a very small way a few weeks ago. The stationary bicycle kills my legs, which tells me I need to keep using it. I use 3-pound hand weights, 3 exercises, 10 reps, 3 sets. I have noticed significant improvement; can lift and carry those heavy boxes of kitty litter (and other things) much more easily. Will start on the elliptical, new to me, very soon. Not sure how to use it, but I have a DVD of instructions.

I'm looking forward to it! --Deb R

Hi Berrymary, Sounds like you are committed to moving, which is excellent! Health and weight loss are really simple. Eat whole veg foods, move your body. From there, let's look at time. Are you doing the elliptical and the weights every day? If yo have the time and you enjoy it, this may work out for you. But if you get burned out on time frames, there are some things to look at. First, I invite you to download my Free Fitness Breakthrough Kit (linked in my signature) which includes an audio, action guide, and special report on Burst Training, or High Intensity Interval Training - you get done in 15 minutes what used to take 45! On the resistance training - your measure of how many reps and weights should be, one, what you can do with good form and 2, what really exhausts that muscle within 90 seconds or less. High reps low weight or low weight high reps, burn the muscle, look to that time frame, and keep in mind what your goals are. Zumba sounds like so much fun and that's important too. My first rule of fitness is never lose your sense of humor! You go! Lani Facebook
