Heart Disease - advice
Posted Friday, March 11, 2011 at 9:44 PM

A friend has a partial blockage, she is overweight, not active and loves all the bad foods. She has agreed to read 1, just 1, book I send her.

Dean Ornish?
Dr. Barnard?

I don't want to blow it, but as I do not have heart disease, I have not read either book so don't know which one to purchase for her. I know we all tend to favor Dr. Barnard, but Dean Ornish became somewhat famous for his research on this, didn't he? Just don't know and could use some help from my friends!

Susan? Anyone??

Hey Oceandog,

Wow, what a tall order. I'm impressed that you're stepping up to the challenge. Smile If it were me, I'd probably go with "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, just because it is specifically geared toward that disease. There are so many great books, it's hard to pick just one!

I was going to suggest exactly what Molly suggested above. I've also known The China Study to change people's lives.

Oceandog,

If you get the chance, let us know how things go.

Coincidentally, I ordered Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn's book last week and I am just waiting for it to arrive in the post. I don't have heart disease yet but there is a family history so I thought I would see what his book says.

I definitely echo Molly and others. "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn. Plain English, straight to the point and focuses on heart disease.

Thank you SO much everyone! I didn't know about that book and that book it is! I also thought about the China Study and may send it as a "bonus" tee hee!

She is a special lady, used to be my mother-in-law and lost her husband not long ago. I care very much for her. I am unsure if she would be willing to make many changes this late in life, but one never knows and I couldn't live with myself if I didn't give it a try!

Thank you again, I knew I could count on all of you!

Hugs
Kym

This is going to be a grumpy post, but so be it. You could send this lady a library. Even if she read everything, I'd bet she'll change nothing.

Oceandog, do what you can do, but don't feel responsible for her choices.

I understand, but if we never try... well nothing every changes! So I try! It is up to her to decide what she does with her life. But I will feel better giving her / reminding her of options.

Prevent Reverse Heart Disease and the China Study are my favourites as well.

Good luck with this Oceandog.

Oceandog,

Have a look under Celebrity tips on the kick-start website. Caldwell Esselstyn and his book is there along with a couple of recipes. I remember because someone mentioned in conversation during the kickstart about how it seems everyone has a book these days.

Ask her, instead of reading JUST one book.. would she do JUST one kickstart?? most people can do anything for just ONE month.
After one month she gets to re-evaluate.

Ask her how long it took her to get heart disease.. and isn't one month worth trying.. it is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of time it takes to develop heart disease.. but chances are she will feel so much better after 21 days that she may continue

I plan on trying all sorts of things, but since she is in her 70s and has eaten meat, cheese and desserts all her life, I don't know if a kickstart is even something she will try.

She is a retired RN, I believe, so I am hoping the scientific aspects of some of these books will open the door to a kickstart another book, The China Study, etc.

Guess it depends on how healthy you are at 80 and 90!

Smoking doesn't appeal to me, never has. But living in a world where everything that looks good or smells(think BBQ) good is safe for me to eat?? Wow.
