Dr. Barnard's "Food That Fight Pain"
Posted Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 7:46 AM

Hi all,
I've been doing some research on an anti-migraine diet and trying to take my migraine headaches much more seriously (after I had a week's worth of debilitating migraines recently and saw how addicted I am to Excedrin Migraine) and my search led me to an article on the PCRM website which mentioned Dr. Barnard's "Foods That Fight Pain" book. Naturally, I've heard of this book before (and have read several of Dr. Barnard's other books) but I didn't realize that his book also addressed migraines.

I'm curious whether anyone has read this book and followed the advice and how it worked for you? I'm guessing the advice is very similar to the 21 day kickstart.

Hi Djuna,
Yes, I've read it, and surprisingly, it's not just a rehash of the Kickstart. That was what I expected, after having read the addictive foods book (which is still really, really good!). This one goes into foods that fight inflammation, so there's less info specifically on migranes, but there is some. I also have used a migraine diet reference that I got from my (old, now retired) neurologist. It seemed to me like a combo of the two approaches was helpful. Barnard's book was definitely worth reading.

Also, I got on Topamax. Don't know if you're familiar with it or if you want to stay away from rx meds, but it has done wonders for me! I have chronic daily headache and migraines, and Topamax has reduced the daily headaches by 50-75%, and the migraines by half, I think. It's been really helpful for me.

Good luck. I hope you find some relief.

Molly, Topomax sounds familiar. Is that a blood pressure med?

It's an anti-seizure medication that was found to work on headaches as well. That's its off-label use.

*Sorry about all the typos in my previous post. I was typing on my tiny phone. Smile

Thanks for the response, Molly. I am actually trying to stay away from any medications and seeing if I can lick these migraines based on lifestyle changes alone. I actually found a message board especially for migraine sufferers and posted an intro there and was quite disappointed when those who responded, though very nice and helpful, were really pushing for me to go to my doctor and get myself right away on meds. Meds aren't always the answer!

I did get Dr. Barnard's book and have been reading it. I'm going to try some of the suggestions there. The one criticism I have of the book is that the recipes section is a little frustrating. There are a lot of recipes that have a star by ingredients indicating that they aren't suitable or the elimination diet but there is never any suggestion of what you can substitute for that ingredient that is on the elimination diet. Some of these recipes have four or five starred items. So how are we supposed to make them if the majority of the ingredients are off limits during the elimination period???
