Glad to see so many of you still here. I too have had several (to many) slips. I've been vegetarian for 5 years, and I've put on a few pounds, so I was hoping besides all the health benefits (and the poor cows -- that vegan would help me drop some weight. Not happening yet. Anyway good luck to everyone. I've already signed up for the next secession. March I think. Congrads to all of you for doing so well.

I am looking fwd to the next 21 day challenge. I haven't had animal products unless it was in something like coffee cake (at other people houses)(o and choc- that is really hard 4 me)- which could be where I am not doing so well. Also, I only lost 5 pds since going vegan but prob because I am having foods that r technically vegan but not the greatest (gluten free bread with tofutti etc). I really need to lose about 40ish more. I had been reconsidering being strictly vegan lately, mostly because of situations that have been truly stressful lately which make it so much harder to plan and prepare meals (stress can make me lazy sometimes). And even though in my heart and head I know better, those protein mongers really get to me sometimes, and I think maybe i need it to lose weight (and I know better but Jillian Micheal's (biggest loser) always says how she tried a vegan diet and couldn't lose weight till she got her protein). I know I still haven't totally eliminated gluten which I need to do as it hurts my stomach too. But I was glad to read the posts as I felt like I needed some support lately. I don't want to go back to eggs or fish (was vegetarian b4)because even thinking of it makes me feel like I am not sticking to my own beliefs. I know I need to do more planning and cooking and I know I feel great when I am strictly vegan with no junkies in my diet. I need to do more greens- someone on here has greens in every meal as their goal and I think of it all the time as I will make it my goal too-hopefuly soon. There is a grocery store here called wegmans that has a rainbow chart (eat a rainbow every day) and I will start using that too. Sorry; this seems like a confession of sorts and really kinda all over the place but it helps to get it out-lol. I need to hit the restart button.

Hey Junebug---------------Everyone needs a little "Pick me up" now and then. No worries. You are conscious and that is what is important. Maybe things will get easier as the seasons change and great fruits and veges become more available. It was I who said I wanted to incorporate more greens. I have been following the 2 week Peta menu (at the PETA website) not to a tee but using it as a guide. I now realize the difference between what we have been doing on the 21 day Kickstart and other vegan diets. The Peta menu consists of a lot of fat, non-whole grain ingredients and very little beans. It made me realize that even being vegan doesn't guarantee good health. So I really want to focus on the healthy part of being vegan next time around thus the greens. I would be interested to know what you mean about the protien and diet thing you saw on the tv show???? I don't watch it. I have lost about 5 pounds. My husband 20. I can't figure it out. He has even incorporated meat 2X per week into his diet yet I remain at 5 pounds. Very frustrating! Thanks for sharing and feel free to vent anytime! That is what we are all here for. SUPPORT!!!!!!

Thanks Bluesgyrl and Shanna I actually am starting to feel a little better- I made roasted brussel sprouts and put a little ume vinegar on them- yummy! I think when the kickstart begins a routine and schedule and support will get me back on path when I stray. I think i also need to have a brkfst lunch dinner thing going instead of grazing all day long - banana here bread with tofutti there. When people say if your vegan you can eat as much as you want they mean as much veggies as u want. I eat 4 emotions as well as hunger but mostly the 1st; the fiber and/or things that fill you up help with that but when you eat other things you just keep eating and the calories add up. I feel healthier and happier but will be ecstatic when I c more change on the scale. I want my insides to match my out. Bluesgyrl the protein thing was Jillian Michaels saying that she tried all different ways to lose weight (before her current diet plan) including being vegan- which didn't work for her. She may have done what alot of people do though is to think you can eat as much of anything as long as its vegan. A bag of tortilla chips, deep fried veggies, endless handfulls of nuts all day long etc.. I could do it if I didn't watch- obviously even though they are vegan your not gonna lose weight that way. For people who need to lose 10-15 pds or ONLY eat when they are hungry it is prob very easy to lose weight as a vegan but when you eat for other reasons and go all day without whole grains, or greens it's not- u prob won't gain weight but it won't fall off either. My sister in law and I talked about it (she is signed up for the march kickstart- but is very thin) she was saying how a lot of kids at her daughters school are veg and they tend to be heavier (she is very attached to appearances and worried about her daughter going vegan). I explained to her you need the nutrients you can't just eat chips and or heavy starchy empty calorie things. If you eat mostly healthy or stop when you are full its ok but emotional eaters not so much (we-I need to eat the right things to make me feel full)not lots of bread (Alicia Silverstone talks about this in her superhero section of her book which I am currently re-reading). So mostly I am reminding myself what I need to do. Shanna thanks for your greens tips it really is what we should aim 4 - greens often- I can eat 3 bananas, oranges apples all day long etc-lol. but I noticed on my chart my greens were lacking. I'm gonna start tommorrow- thanks again girlz!

Junebug- Glad to help perk you up. I totally understand the whole emotional eating thing. I have been over weight my entire life. And although it would be a lie to say that I wasn't expecting to loose more than 5#s going vegan, it's better than gaining it. I mean you discuss eating fruits, nuts, etc. I say eat all you want. I don't know about you but I certainly didn't gain weight from eating too many fruits and almonds! Ha! Ha! I do understand what you mean though. Eating 4 bags of fried potatoe chips aren't exactly taking care of your body. Which, is what at least I am here for. If I gain because I ate too many almonds or too much fruit than so be it! This forum is a great tool. People like Shanna, Wild4stars and Serene have been a tremendous help. On the supportive front as well as technical questions and suggestions............................. Which reminds me.........Shanna great idea on the greens. You know, when I think of greens I think of sitting down to a bowl of them. Although, I do really like them, I think to add them to things is a much better way to get them all in. I have really been enjoying mixing them with beans per the January Kickstart. I read the Kind Diet and she says she doesn't include certain greens such as spinach, chard and beet greens in her daily diet because they contain oxalic acid which inhibits calcium absorption. Go figure. Of course these are the ones I like the best. Shanna what's you take on that? On those tough days we have to all try to remember that this is a journey. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Hey, could someone remind me that I said that when Im having one of those bads days!!!!! Another Ha!

I think it was Junebug who said she read The Kind Diet. In my opinion, it is not a fantastic book. It was an extremely easy read. However, because it is simple to read, it speaks of nutrition in a way that most people can truly comprehend. Personally, I fall asleep after reading the drown on medical journal reports. So in that respect it was refreshing. I knew most of what she was talking about and if I knew then it would be a total waste of time for a "Repository" such as yourself. Ha! Ha! You brought up another great point I have been meaning to inquire about. When the doctors, dieticians, etc. speak of greens I always just assumed that they were greens (as if they were a catagory all their own). I didn't realize that salads with lettuce were considered greens. That may be a "Duh" moment but I don't consider lettuces to be extremely healthy the way "Greens" are. What's you take on that? Great idea about throwing that Oxalic question out to Susan in March. I will do so.

I don't think iceberg lettuce has much nutrition to it but some of the others, romaine, bibb, green leaf, red leaf have B vitamins, etc. I try to vary the types of lettuce I eat but I love romaine. I usually use romaine and then add others. The term "greens" usually refers to collards, turnip, kale, mustard, etc. But I think in this forum anything that is a leafy green is called greens.

Thank you both for the clarification on the green things. At least I know that Im not that far off. Im with you Wild4stars....I like to mix them all up. Although I have tried collards, chard, spinach and kale, I haven't tried turnip tops and things like that. I will say that my husband is first generation Greek American and whenever there is an open field of green things he is always on the hunt for certain greens. I don't exactly know what he looks for but I can say it is rather embarassing at times. Ha! Ha! I should add that he cooks them with garlic and they are fantastic! Go figure! Shanna didn't think you dissed the book. I just wanted you to know that to say the least it was not one of the most thought provoking pieces of literature that I have had the honor to read. I am making a total presumption here but you sound like the type of person who may enjoy thought provoking books. It was actually a compliment to you.........well........check it out and when you get a chance let us know what you think. I will conceede that it would make a nice gift for someone who is an Alicia fan or is just beginning the journey. From my standpoint, being from the Bay Area you would have to try extremely hard not to know a lot of the basics. I understand that a lot of places in Up State (caps?) are very "Earthy" also???????

I've been doing well since the Jan. Kickstart! Afterward I did have a few homemade veggie pots pies that were in my freezer. They had dairy, but I didn't feel too guilty since I had purchased them last summer from the local farmer's market. The only other intentional "slip up" was finishing up some pesto that was in my freezer and then on Valentine's Day drinking a Bailey's concoction someone made me. I kinda had to laugh though--when my friend handed it to me I reminded her I no longer consumed dairy. She immediately volunteered to remake my Bailey's Irish CREAM with almond milk in it rather than regular milk so it would be vegan! I thanked her and said not too worry about it--unfortunately the almond milk wouldn't cancel out the cream in the mixer! Very kind of her to offer though. My friends and coworkers have been incredibly supportive. My goal this time around is to increase my fruits and veggies, esp my greens. I'm pretty excited to start seeing some spring veggies in the market soon. I also hope to continue to slowly reduce added fats. I'm down 19 pounds though so far! I have 30-40 more to drop to be in my goal range--hoping to lose 5 pounds a month until I get there. In February I took a series of vegan cooking classes and that really helped keep me motivated as well as give me lots more yummy things to incorporate into my menus. Tonight I had a class on how to make non-dairy cheese. My expectations were pretty low, but we made some great alternatives. None would be mistaken for the real thing, but all were 100 times healthier than real cheese or the fake stuff in the supermarket, and they all were (surprisingly!) tasty.

I'm staying vegan ... tightening up by avoiding the veggie cheese with casien. I haven't avoided honey as an ingredient, yet. It's lower priority. I still have last year's leather shoes and my very old leather purse. We aren't yet prepared to get rid of our leather three piece living room furniture! The dogs still eat regular dog food. My goal is to live free of animal products, but that is not a goal my husband currently shares. I've recently added yoga to my life. I'm really enjoying it and I'm getting relief for my bad lower back and hips. I've enjoyed yoga before, but somehow it is clicking for me in a new way. Jean

I'm happy to say that I have kept with it. On Fat Tuesday, I had two pieces of pizza, with the intention of starting again on Wednesday. Boy, was that a mistake! I couldn't believe how sick I felt after no cheese since Jan 1! Anyway, now if I ever get a craving, I remember that feeling. As to the healthy eating, I've been under some major stress lately, so I've been eating some vegan junk food (thanks to whoever posted that Oreos are vegan!) I joined the kickstart again with the hope of getting support and inspiration to get back on the "healthy" wagon!

I became vegan on January 1st of this year with the 21 Day Kickstart. I've stayed vegan! And, although I've been tempted, I haven't "cheated" once. A lot of that is due to my very supportive, non-vegan, husband. I'm feeling much better - I can tell that the vegan lifestyle makes me feel better. And, I've lost 8 pounds without ever feeling like I'm starving myself. It just feels so good to be eating a healthy plant-based diet. Every time we've eaten at restaurants, except for one time, the wait staff and chefs have been very cooperative - even at the chain restaurants. I'm planning on staying vegan.
