I assume that if the ingredients include sugar, then it's not recommended. Right?

Right, but you can get organic apple butter that only has one ingredient... apples! It is concentrated though, so don't eat the whole bottle!

I buy apple butter at Whole Foods that has apples and cinnamon, period. It's very good, you don't miss the sugar, but I agree it should be used sparingly. Treat it like a special treat.

we make our own apple butter and some uses sugar and some uses just cinnamon, depending on the qualities and mix of the apples - we buy large crates of "assorted thirds" from the orchard for making apple sauce and apple butter (which is basically applesauce cooked down a bit more). So, sometimes there are more tart apples (like granny smith) and other times there are more sweet apples (like Cortlands), so some batches do use a little sugar (organic evaporated cane juice sometimes, raw sugar other times). Either way, we don't eat more than about 1/2 cup of sauce or a tsp or two of butter at a time - that's all you need really.
