Is Dr Barnard Canadian ?
Posted Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 5:29 PM
You know, one of the hottest mysteries that people have been talking about in England since forever, is how to tell the difference between Americans and Canadians. Or whether it's even possible. A lot of English people believe that there's no difference, and it's just a government hoax to bring in more taxes (somehow). I don't think that's true, but I know for a fact that even the prime minister (David Cameron) can't tell the difference. I know because he told me so. Basically, he said that the only way he can tell the difference is if he can coax the person into saying the phrase "Bish, Bash, Bosh". Which is actually the hardest thing he's ever tried to do. Apparently it's not a phrase that Americans / Canadians often use. Anyway, I know this question isn't strictly related to the Kickstart, but I think I might be on the verge of cracking this thing. And it all depends on whether Dr Barnard is Canadian. If he is, then I think I've mastered it. Can anyone help me out with this ?

Back to square one for you, because he's from North Dakota. Close though.

Thanks Susan. I see North Dakota is on the Canadian border. I'm getting better at this. By the way, you may need to familiarise yourself with the phrase "Bish, Bash Bosh", if you ever do a UK 21 Day Kickstart. Or to use it's correct name: "Bloody 21 Day Kickstart".

Theodore your mind is boggling. Truly. AND in a good (or at least intersting) way! Hugs Kym

Theodore My friend, it is so easy to be good to someone you adore, rather the difficulty comes in being good to the rest of the population!

What I think is that everyone should have an Oceandog.

I believe Dr. Barnard said he's from Fargo, North Dakota, which is an hour from Grand Forks, North Dakota where I was born. It's only 3 hours from the Canadian border and a lot of people talk a little like Canadians in ND even though they are not from it. It's funny because my two brothers and me were born and raised in ND and two of us don't have any sort of "accent" but my one brother really has the "canadian" acceent. Strange!!!

Basically if you have seen the movie, Fargo, they got the accent down, some people are that extreme and downward to varying degrees. But I don't hear any accent from Dr. Barnard. Just like people say I don't have the accent and are surprised I'm from North Dakota!! Just strange who gets the accent and who doesn't..

Can you give me an example of a word that Canadians pronounce differently from Americans ?

Let's say you are saying, "I went out and about the other day." My nephew who has a big accent says it more like (this is the cloest spelling way I can do it to make it "sound" right using typing). "I went oat and aboat". Kind of like saying out with a long A sound. Hard to "say" in writing.. Even when you say Oh yeah normally. It sounds more like Oh Yaaaahhh!! Ever listen to those canadian hockey players!!! Otherwise listen to Fargo, Frances McDermott who plays the lead detective is GOOD!! A little over the top but really some people do sound just like her. Lots of "phrases" Don't ya know!! Oh Yaa!!! Not sure if that conveyed the sound or not...

Kathy This is really great. Exactly the kind of information I've been searching for. Thank you so much.

"That was a big snowstorm, eh?" "Want some beer, eh?" --Deb R

Definitely the Canadians say "EH". Not so much in ND.. Remember SCTV, Hey you big Hoser!!! Those guys.. More canadian!! It's funny to go back to ND/MN and listen to everyone back there when you haven't heard it in so long!! Some are SO strong with the accent, and they all have their phrases!! It's funny!! But the big one in ND is Oh Yaaahhh!! And Canada Eh!! I have noticed here in PA the canadians that come down don't have the accent like the ones that came to ND.. Interesting!!

I was reading that it might be down to a Scottish or Irish influence. Irish folks say things like "don't ya know". But "Oh Yaahh", that sounds more like South African. Just out of interest, can you tell the difference between an English accent and an Australian accent.

Yes I think pretty much I can tell the difference. I actually like an australian accent better than an english.. And the Oh Yaaahhh sounds like the Yah in Yahweh!!

Just wanted to add to the list of Canadians William Shatner Martin Short John Candy Raymond Burr Lorne Greene Leslie Neilson and many more. Also about accents, when I was in Texas I would just use "out" in a sentence and everyone would know I was Canadian. Also the Maritimes do have a different accent. And Newfoundland has a very, very different accent. Of course Quebec has the French.
