GMO and soybeans

Ok people................I saw Food Inc. last night. I tell you, I have considered myself pretty informed until I watched that movie. Yes, I knew about the horrible slaughter houses and the cruelty to animals but the rest of it including the industrialized food system is unbelievable.

Sometime back I remember one of you talking about how you only buy organic tofu. When I read it the GMO factor did not occurr to me (even though that was the topic.......duh). Since GMO soy beans are so prevalent in our society, how do we know which products are and aren't GMO? According to the movie California shot down the labelling (I think that was how it went) but is it a federal law now? Obviously this applies to anything made with soy beans so how do you know? Is the fact that it is organic mean that it in not GMO.

Im a bit freaked out about this. In fact, Im having a Soelent (spelling?) Green moment.

Please someone knowledgable clarify for me.

Thanks.

It's my understanding that to be labeled "organic" it cannot be GMO, however, I always look for the words "non GMO."

I just got the movie but haven't watched it yet. I want to watch it when I can give it my undivided attention and just haven't had that chance.

If you haven't seen "Earthlings" yet, it can be found on-line. Very disturbing.

Man................this was very helpful but very confusing. You have to be a biochemist now to go grocery shopping! Just the thought of eating that stuff makes me feel sick. Like I said, Soelent Green. If you haven't seen that movie............it's an interesting one. Hey, they could even call it Soylent Green! Ok.now Im being morbid.

In the movie Food Inc., it talks about how all the big food companies have bought out the smaller organic food products and are therefore producing them. That is one of the reasons why it is mind boggling. What do they do....do a run of food using GMO soy and then clean everything(yeah right) and then do a run of food products without using the GMO products????????

Regardless, I appreciate the clarification. Thank you.
