sprouted bread
Posted Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 1:31 PM
I just purchased some sprouted bread and I really like it! It has no flour so it doesn't bloat me like regular bread does. Any thoughts or comments on its nutritional value?

Laurabeth If I give you my opinion on the sprouted bread, will you give me your opinion on the Dr Barnard / James Spader thing ??

Well actually, I had to google James Spader just to see who he is. James Spader's face is bigger which is probably due to eating meat, fish and dairy products.

I see your points Laurabeth. Well said. With regard to the sprouted bread, I think it's quite good. I've heard that gluten intolerant people can eat sprouted bread witout a problem. Although I can't say for certain if that's true. Recently, a lot of people have said that sprouted bread is too crumbly and makes me look ridiculous. At least I think that's what they've said. I usually have my hands over my ears when people talk to me these days, in case they make any insensitive remarks about my new goatie beard. I mostly stick to the flour-based breads myself because I prefer the taste.

A doctor once told me that I'm probably gluten intolerant but I didn't put much stock in that opinion. At that time, it seemed as though everyone was jumpin on that gluten free bandwagon. So since I embrace gluten I'd likely tolerate your goatie beard as well. P.S. No wheat was harmed during the typing of this post.

I am with you Laurabeth, I don't know what he looks like either - I guess I don't see enough movies. I love sprouted bread. I have seen some that are just sprouted grain, and some that include white flour. I prefer the former, but the later is 1/4 the price, and I eat very little of it. I think that I have read that sprouted bread is lower glycemic. Theodore, now you really must get a picture of yourself up - you talk about your appearance so much that we must really see you!

I like it. I generally prefer it toasted, but I normally toast bread for my sandwiches anyhow. I don't feel the need or desire to give up regular bread, but I've been alternating between sprouted bread and regular bread. It will stay in the rotation!

I like it lightly toasted too. we also like the sprouted raisin bread it has an almost nutty flavor to it.

The couple times we tried sprouted breads, they definitely needed to be toasted. When they get toasted, they are crispy and tasty but untoasted they seem really kind of dry and crumbly (and hubby has a full beard and mustache that collect crumbs for later snacking ) Odd that toasted crispy is better than cold crumbly when they aren't all that far different in texture. Mostly we don't eat a lot of actual loaf type bread - homemade whole wheat tortillas and bagels are the mainstays in our house. The bagels are particularly good as a platform for homemade black bean burgers - the denser texture really works well. Loaves of bread are baked for specific occasions (like holiday gatherings) and rarely, if ever, in the summer. --Deb R

Deb, Homemade breads, bagels & tortillas sounds so yummy but closest I've ever come to making my own breads was to throw one of those store-bought frozen doughs in the oven.

Homemade flour tortillas are super easy and pretty quick. That's become our default 'bread product' over the last few years. Hubby can decide "we need more tortillas today" and have them complete in an hour (give or take - if son or I are handy to help flip things, it goes faster because we can assembly line the cooking and rolling). Takes way less time than making bread or bagels.--Deb R

So, he made some yummy pumpernickel sandwich type rolls. Today he'll be making tortillas to go with chili for dinner. --Deb R

He loves having more folks to cook for besides just the three of us. --Deb R
