Kids!!!

Good News! My son who will be turning six in February announced he wants to be VEGETARIAN. I was so delighted, something finally clicked. He said "I don't want to hurt or kill animals". He's seen a cartoon several times, but I guess he finally made the connection. Animanicas: Rita and Runt. I guess somewhere in the scene the dog mentions to the people to eat Vegetarian instead of cats. My son even mentioned this morning to make sure his lunch is vegetarian. He was fed vegan and vegetarian food up until the age of two. His dad exposed him to meat, but I still cook majority of the meals, and keep them vegan. I know dad doesn't fully agree with this. Dad did agree last night to respect our son's wishes. This is definitely going down as a memorable date.

Hooray! I used to have a cookbook for my daughter (she went veg at 10) and it was designed towards kids. It showed how to pack lunches and make them "fun", faces, shapes etc... There was another Kids can Cook, it taught them how to make basics. Often if they are a part of the planting, growing and preparation they are more interested in their food. Not to mention fostering a knowledge such as this is a wonderful thing to instill into an up and coming young man! I believe if you do a bit of research you can find ways to prepare his lunches and meals in a highly appealing 6-year-old way that will make him the envy of all his mates, opening yet more doors! GOOD FOR YOU and for DH for being supportive of his son's desires. Awesome! Happy story!

That is great. I have four vegetarian daughters. The oldest, who are now 16 and 18 have been for about 10 years or more. There was a defining moment when they went veg instantly. They were in my brother-in-law's barn to see his new foal. They then went to look at the steer. Then it was lunchtime. When they heard that it was hamburgers, they looked at each other, and both said, "I'll just have a plain bun." They haven't touched meat since, except for marshmallows (cuz it doesn't look like animal). My youngest two, 5 and 7, were born into a meatless house. I let them choose whether or not they wanted meat when we were at family gatherings. Once, one of them tried some lasagne. She ate everything but the meat. That she took out of her mouth and handed it to me. Now, at age 7, she is a veg out of compassion for animals in addition to what started as an ick factor. She also thinks it is really weird to drink milk that is meant for calves.

RE: Kids!!! - Thank you all

Thank you all for the wonderful support and encouragement. I really appreciate the feedback, and warm wishes.
Sorry, have to share. I'm so proud of my little guy. His kindergarten class went on a field trip yesterday, which took place at an Italian restaurant. He was so excited to share, and said the following...Mommy, I had a vegetarian pizza with spinach, olives and tomatoes! It tasted very good! You could see he was so delighted, and I was too. I then reached in my back seat and showed him a cookbook I had purchased during lunch. Vegetarian Kids' Cookbook: Fresh, fun food show in 350 step-by-step by Roz Denny. I wanted him to read the title and have him realize he's not alone, and that other kids eat the same way. I do have Jennifer McCann's - Vegan Lunch Box with neat ideas for kids, highly recommend it. Thank you all once again. Take care, Shanel

Yes I have Vegan Lunch Box as well. I am embarrassed to admit how many cookbooks I have and just ordered another one ~ Veganomicon. Hope I can use it with Gluten-free. So far my fave is Gluten-Free Vegan. Is there a cookbooks anonymous? Anyone?

Cookbooks Anonymous! Highly doubt it, but I would certainly belong to that group.
Gluten Free is tough but doable, especially for me since I'm allergic to Soy, go figure. I'm so glad I have a dehydrator - lots of work tough.

Veganomicon does have GF recipes with a little icon indicator and some suggestions on easily adaptable ones. I wish my kid would go veg.

Shanel.. that was a great story about the car & pizza... thanks for sharing! it's never to young to teach children to eat properly.. so many kids of his age really don't have any idea or don't care? i wonder if other parents give kids the credit they deserve? maybe they don't do it, because parents think the kids are too young to teach? or maybe they are scared because they are growing and don't want to screw it up, and just go along with what they know..? anyhow.. great story.. shows what a great parent you are. it must have been very heart warming.

My little grandniece is ten. A couple of years ago, when she went to her father's, he had shot a deer and he dressed it out in front of her. She was appalled and from then on she did not want to eat meat. However, my niece and her husband (grandniece's stepfather) think that grandniece must eat meat, so they make her. I cleared it with my niece beforehand and she said it was okay, so I gave grandniece a couple of kids' vegan books for Christmas. Unfortunately, niece won't let grandniece make the vegan breakfasts she wants on weekends because they must have bacon and eggs. I feel so bad for the child and plan to have her for some overnights and we'll try some vegan foods together. My stepmom made pasta e fagioli on Sunday, and grandniece lapped up two bowls. I think she is a natural vegetarian! My mom was; she hated meat from the time she was a small child, but back then her education had been that she thought she needed meat to be healthy. If she had lived, I think she might have become vegetarian once she had access to the facts.

DS wasn't fond of meat as a toddler and we just got in the habit of making mix'n'match meals - the meat portion was separate from the starch and veggies so each person could adjust as they chose. As he got older, he did start eating some meat, preferring chicken to beef. Then he started liking burgers. Now, at 12, he prefers veg*n meals most of the time. Meals that are prepared here at home are vegan and he's fine with that. When we're out, it's his choice what to eat. From the time he was little, even though we weren't nearly veg*n, we called it what it was "pig meat", "cow meat", etc so he knew where it came from ("pork" and "beef" somewhat hide the origins of the item unless you know the language origins of "puerco" and "boeuf"). When hubby was growing up, his family raised chickens for eggs and when their laying days were done, they became stew. So, DS had heard hubby describe the process (to some extent, didn't get too gory because I couldn't stand too much gore). Recently, we were at some sort of social event and DS was talking to someone away from my earshot. The person came over later and said "So <DS> mentioned that you're vegetarian." Guess he's self-identifying as vegetarian more - he used to say he was an omnivore. --Deb R

Great stories everyone, Thank you for sharing. More good news! Yesterday, I finally had a chance to talk to a parent whose child will be attending my son's birthday party. I asked if her child had any special dietary needs. She then expressed that they were all vegetarian. She was excited to hear I'm vegan and that our boys have something else in common, they love playing together. We talked for some time about our boys' eating palette, luckily they both have a wide range. She then shared the news with her son, and our two boys started talking about their favorite foods. It was such a sweet moment, and I was overjoyed. I also found a meetup group for veggie kids/parents not too far from where we live. We'll be meeting up in mid February. Thanks for listening. Shanel

Kids are amazing and smart, they observe even when we think they're not. My suggestion: Make delicious treats, and live by example. I try my best to express the importance of respect, kindness and hope this rubs off on my boy. Continue on your path, and let them observe the benefits. Best of luck!

Seriously, they WOULD know how.... it is THIS over 40 that doesn't! Actually, I don't usually have trouble like that so I am not sure what I did wrong on this site! So I guess I shall remain a mystery. Thanks to Theodore, he let the cat out of the box I am a She and not He.. hahaha My name is from my 2 favorite things, the ocean and dogs. But to signify I was a female between those 2 words, can only be done by dog and well, that just didn't sound right at all! tee hee

Speaking of gender...when I made up the name Veganer I just threw something together real quick and made it up. But then later I looked it up and according to Wiktionary.org a veganer is a male person following a vegan diet. A veganerin is a female person following a vegan diet so actually I am veganerin not veganer.
