I don't <think> this has been addressed but...

please forgive me if it has and I haven't found it yet. Soy...almond....rice....coconut milk (the So Delicious type, not the canned) Which is the best nutritional value for low calories and fat? Thank you soooo much for your help! Now I'm off to search the board so I can delete this thread if it's been addressed! )

Molly I will let someone with more "know how" address the finer points to this, but I don't think this has been addressed and I think many of them are very similar and it ends up being a dietary and taste issue. I know some avoid soy products so lean towards the almond and rice and I know a few that avoid nut products so lean to soy and rice. I am not a huge fan of rice or hemp milk myself. I used to faithfully drink 8th Continent, then found it was among the healthiest of alternative milks, so switched to Silk. Then I discovered Blue Diamond Almond milk and am currently loving it. I hope you get some better details, I am not good at that, I am more of the "encouragement team" !

I usually drink almond milk because I like the way it tastes. Hemp milk is OK, but doesn't have a milky look/consistency to it. I just can't see putting it in my cereal. Pacific has a low-fat unsweetened vanilla-flavored almond milk that's 40 calories, with 2.5 grams of fat/8oz serving. It's got Vitamin D, Riboflavin & Vitamin A. The Blue Diamond brand has the same calories, 1/2 a gram more fat per serving and lacks Riboflavin, but has Calcium, Vitamin E, Phosphorous & Magnesium. Silk Almond Milk has 35 calories unsweetened, 60 calories sweetened, 90 calories vanilla, or 120 calories chocolate-flavored. All varieties have Calcium & Vitamin E, but I'm not sure what else since I couldn't find the label online. I usually base my purchase on pricing with coupons & weekly specials, but Blue Diamond is my preference.

Oh thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to reply to my question! I truly appreciate it. I think maybe I'll have a little of each and decide which is tastiest for me!

That's just what we did - and decided that almond was our favorite, rice tasted 'funny' on Cheerios, and soy caused massive PMS like symptoms for me. I use the plain unsweetened most of the time and we use that or the sweet vanilla for baking and such (works great for making puddings!) One interesting side effect (so to speak) of switching to plant milk from cow's was that we don't drink near as much milk as we used to use. --Deb R

Same here, when I quit drinking cow's milk nearly 25 years ago, they didn't have any really good subs, so I just drank water. Then YEARS later, I was visiting someone, (can't remember who or where) and breakfast was cold cereal and milk or eggs and bacon..eewww, so I opted for the cereal and milk. The milk tasted so bad I ended up with no breakfast. Now I do occasionally drink a glass of almond milk as a beverage and I do enjoy it a lot, but it is more of a treat and I use it as such. I did a great deal of taste testing over the years (when I started it was either make it yourself or powdered) and still do when something new hits the markets. Trader Joe's even has their own brand of almond milk. Blue Diamond is still my fave but TJ isn't bad!

Yup, I don't think any of us really like things with cow's milk anymore - tolerable if there's no other option (as in your example) but we'd rather have water. Kinda puzzles folks at gatherings when there are all sorts of soft drinks and such and DS (12 yrs old) chooses water - and he's picky about that as well (he says the water in some places makes him feel thirsty! Mostly it's any time we're someplace that has highly chlorinated, chemical tasting 'city water'). We do like making hot cocoa on these snowy days with the vanilla almond milk and DH and DS will dunk cookies sometimes. --Deb R

I've been really scared because I've been having trouble with my breasts seeming a bit sore/tender. I have a mammo scheduled for Monday but I've just been having these panic attacks about cancer. When you said that soy gave you PMS symptoms, I thought WOW, I've been drinking a TON of soy milk lately (and this pain has started only a couple of weeks ago.) Now I'm not delusional in thinking that it couldn't be something more but you, my friend, have given me hope that it really is nothing! I'll grab that bit of hope and keep it until something (or nothing) is found! Thank you thank you thank you!

When you said that soy gave you PMS symptoms, I thought WOW, I've been drinking a TON of soy milk lately (and this pain has started only a couple of weeks ago.) Yeah, that was the first big give away - I was using soymilk on my cereal every morning and after a few days I started having the tenderness, moodiness, etc that I would normally have attributed to PMS - except (a) I've never really been bothered much by PMS type symptoms (b)it was totally the wrong timeframe. Thought out what was new or different and cut the soymilk. Voila, within a day or two, symptoms disappearing. That's not to say that soy is a 'bad' thing, just that it might not be the best choice for everyone. --Deb R

He can taste and smell the chlorine, even if the household has a filtration system.
