Hi, It's my 10th day vegan - started the 13th! It's going well; don't miss meat. Cheese calls my name a bit. It was fun to discover Boca burgers: mushroom mozzarella and Cheeseburger satisfy the cheese craving! Two of them deliver a protein kick, and they taste delicious on a whole grain bun with ketchup! Nice article on exercise's effects on inflammation, Lani - keep 'em coming! Louise Edit: Boco Cheeseburgers actually have real cheese in the ingredients - Oops! No more of those . . .

Louise there are other imitation meat sources you can try while you are still adjusting to veganism that have no animal products in them- I think gardenburgers are one of them, gardein products as well as fieldroast products etc.. Also the ketchup has LOTS of sugar so try doing humus (high in good protein and extra yummy flavors), vinegar, mustard or new spreads that are better for you and will give you the full effect of veganism's energy benefits and "clean" feeling - great job so far

Thanx for the suggestion, Junebug! Boca does have vegan options, but I should have been more careful! No wonder the cheeseburger satisfied my cheese craving - LOL! It wasn't until I posted that I looked up the Boca website and say, oh-oh, it's got real cheese in it! Can you name a commercial hummus without too much sodium? I am careful with ketchup . . . probably limit to half a TBSP. Louise

Yeah, those veggie burgers can be sneaky like that! Don't kick yourself, and just move on. Amy's and Gardenburger both make vegan ones. The Boca Original is also marked vegan I think? (Been awhile.) Morning Star has more nonvegan than vegan stuff, and annoyingly they keep changing all their recipes. Quorn is all nonvegan (egg whites). With Amy's stuff it's really easy to tell: flip over the box and look look for "(VEGAN)" as the very first thing after "Ingredients:". Saves lots of reading!

I think Asmar's hummus is pretty low sodium--but I guess it depends on how big your servings are. It always says 2 tbs. I think it's like 150 mg sodium and 2 grams of fat (tahini/canola oil/olive oil). I just happened to check that shopping yesterday. Their olive-flavored one might be higher.

I have already signed up also. I was wondering if a shopping list before the first day. Jeannie

Hi Jeannie, They did email a shopping list before the last one, but it was just staples and didn't actually match the meal plan for the week. That was one of the reasons I kind of made my own plan, choosing whatever recipes at Nutrition MD or other PCRM sites matched what I had on hand. My grocery store is 15 miles from my house, so I only go once a week or even 2 weeks sometimes. A few people here complained about the list not matching though, so maybe it will be different this time.

Hi Louise: I commend you on your efforts. I am a "Newbe" also. Started Jan.1st. I absolutley love the hummas in the MD Website receipes. The only fat in it is the tahini. My husband and I are making it weekly and are eating it with not only pitas but as a dip for carrots. I would highly recommend you looking it up. It was on the Jan. Kickstart menu. Another one that was on the menu and delicious was the black bean dip.

You-all are a good influence - I bought imported hummus in a can today! It had the best ingredients: chickpeas, sesame seeds, no oil . . . and the salt was 100 mg per 2 TBSP. Since one can has 13 servings, that is 1300 mg per can, so I took half, and blended it with no salt added pinto beans - it's great! So I ate half a half, or about 325 mg sodium . . . on a corn tortilla, it keeps the salt low = plus it was good! I microwaved the corn tortilla 15 seconds, and added the hummus, and microwaved it another 15 seconds - yummm!
