soy??
Posted Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 12:32 PM
im looking for some definitive articles on whether or not soy is actually healthy for you. i always err on the side that it is healthy for you and i LOVE tofu. every once in awhile i hear people say its not healthy for you like some people claim and can actually have negative effects on your health but ive never really or read anythign that this claim was based on. last night i was at a vegan cooking class (fun!) and the instructor was talking about soy and how her personal opinion is that its not as healthy as people claim and can actually have negative effects on your health especially for women. she said she was goign to print out some articles for us to read and bring them to the next class but im really sure this will actually happen and in the meantime i am intrigued. she also mentioned that FERMENTED tofu *IS* good for you for some reason. so i think she said tempeh was in that category anyone have anything to add to this controversy? i am not prepared to give up tofu.

Lisa, My belief is that the soy products that have been changed and added to EVERYTHING (soy isolates, etc..) are the items questionable. Think fillers and highly processed mock meats/foods. It is also my belief that tofu, (minimally processed), soy beans, etc... are healthy for you. As with most everything the more it is changed from how it grows, I believe it is less healthy. I am not a "techie" and there are some lovely people here that are "in the know" who can give you places to read up on this. Eat whole foods, natural, non processed, vegan and you will find yourself on a healthy path! Best wishes, Kym

I heard, but really don't know, that soy can raise estrogen levels in some people. I don't have problems with estrogen - my body has more testosterone, so I don't think it will make a difference for me. I am very interested in what you find out. Keep posting!

I agree with OceanDog, the less processed the better. Plus, like other foods, I think you shouldn't over consume any one food. If you're drinking soy milk, eating tofu, meat substitutes and putting edemame on your salads everyday, that just might be too much soy.

They touched on one of the big reasons I try to avoid soy products - I'm already on medication for hypothyroid and, as they indicated in the article, soy and thyroid meds are not a good mix (calcium supplements and thyroid meds are also not a good mix). For me, having something like soy milk on cereal for 2 or 3 days brings on PMS like symptoms (bleh) - whether that's estrogen related or actually another facet of the thyroid situation, I don't really know but I also don't really care to push it to find out. This is one of those areas where each person really needs to determine what is best for their unique siutation. --Deb R

interesting article thanks for sharing that. i may print it out and bring it to our next cooking class. i hope the teacher remembers to bring her articles sort of "against" soy. im starting to think of soy in a similar light as wheat gluten. ie it can be healthy for you but many people seem to have a sensitivity to it

Wheat gluten - no no- that would be me. Eating whole unprocessed foods is the ONLY way!
