What are you all doing to gear up?
Posted Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at 9:41 AM
I'm "using up." Have a bit of skim milk left; had my last piece of salmon last night. I can't afford to throw food out in this economy, so I am replacing non-vegan foods with vegan foods as I go along. I think today's meals will wind up being totally vegan.

I'm not really doing anything special, as I have been trying to eat vegan for the last several months. My "exceptions" have been when eating out, not in the meals I have prepared at home. We do still have butter and cheese in the house for my hubby - he supports my eating plan and goes along with most of it, but has not totally given up meat and dairy for himself. It would be nice to see menus or a shopping list for the first week so we could stock up if needed. Mostly I have been buying whatever looks good at the farmers market or in the produce section at the grocery, and filling in with beans etc. It will be nice to get some new inspiration!

I've been 99.9% vegan since the January kickstart. The only reason on don't say 100% is because there are times when eating at someone's house I'm sure I don't know EVERY ingredient. Probably the same with some restaurants. I can only claim 100% at home. I really have no "gearing up" to do!

I'm right w/Vikki on this one. The only time I'm not so sure is eating out or at friends...and kids hang on, cuz when ppl get wind of what you are doing there will be two reactions. Either they will be supportive or saboteurs. But if you are in this for the long haul you'll get past this too. Learn to laugh and adapt, LOL! Good luck to you all and I'm looking forward to 'meeting' on the boards.

There is a third possible reaction. Some will love PREACHING about how unhealthy your eating is. You MUST eat meat to get protein, you MUST drink milk to get calcium. You are going to die an early death for lack of protein. You'll be weak, you'll lose all your hair. My mother told me I was KILLING myself.

We are used to this ... my hubby has been a vegetarian - but not a vegan - for going on 20 years, so they have ceased commenting on our "kooky" way of eating.

Vikki- you are SO RIGHT!!! LOL Soon2BVegan-then you are all set. After almost a year there are a few select ppl that are still waiting around to see me 'slip' or go back to 'normal'. I just keep telling them that I am so glad that I can help give them something else to lament over then their own drama, kind of a break for them, LOL!

Just bought Dr. Barnards new cookbook today and went to the health food store to start getting stocked up again. Had a nice salad for lunch at their salad bar

Craftycat-I like the quote 'Vegan again in 2010'. I tried to go vegan a couple of years ago...didn't last very long because no one was really with me or overly supportive. Hoping I can finally say 'To stay vegan since 2010!' Best to everyone on a life changing journey!

I too tried to go Veg once before but was unsuccessful. In the meantime I have been Vegetarian for over 3 years now, and Gluten free for going on 5 months (with an occasional slip up on the gluten free part lately due to stress and convenience.) I am hoping I can do this but like most have said, without support or that "partner" it is difficult to do. Keeping my hopes up that I can do this.

Sarajo, do it for yourself. If you need support, come here and I'm sure all these wonderful people will give it to you. Also, maybe there is a vegan or vegetarian group in your town. My husband and I have found a vegetarian meetup supper group; they meet in other people's homes for potlucks. We went once and had some interesting conversations and wonderful food.

Soon2BVeg has the right idea. Everyone has to find their own inspiration. Mine came from purposely watching the Peta videos to learn how those pretty packages of meat got to my market. Took me a few weeks to push them a bit further back in my mind, but those videos made me strong in my resolve. The health benefits were simply a happy consequence. I work in a Subway restaurant, and that first week was a real challenge. My biggest obstacle was cheese; I was a cheese-aholic. I can't believe I've been vegan for a year now. I'm certainly not a cook by any means, but I've discovered so many new and wonderful things. That said, being vegan is more than a diet of just not eating animals or their byproducts. Here's a little something for inspiration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC9OgM5N3uA&feature=related
"But for the sake of some little mouthful of flesh we deprive a soul of the sun and light, and of that proportion of life and time it had been born into the world to enjoy." Plutarch.

I'm trying to get half ways started a day early. I've signed up for this kick-start each time it's been run, and only manage a few days being vegan. My living situation doesn't make things that easy, I live in a house full of "mighty hunters" who make fun of me for wanting to eat differently. Still, I sign up and hope for the best, one of these times I'll make it!

Hey all, I am so impressed that everyone is making such great efforts! When I did the March Kickstart, I thought there was no way I'd ever make it as a vegan – but I did! And I've stayed that way, despite criticism from others, despite the trouble of cooking from scratch, of not being able to go out to eat easily, etc. It is worth it. YOU CAN DO THIS, TOO! Each one of you has the strength to follow through – otherwise you wouldn't have started! The first step is the most difficult, and you've already made that one... just keep going! You can do it!
