Weight gain-normal?

Hi all, I started eating vegan last Saturday and have gained 1 1/2 pounds! Prior to that I was following the South Beach diet and had lost 15 pounds so far. Should I just ride this out (carbs can cause water retention, correct?)? I'm not believing how easy it has been to make the transition and secondly how good the food can be! I'm keeping my calories at about 1200 (I'm 5'1" and have another 24 pounds--er--make that 25 1/2--to go).

Are you eating LOW fat, like in very low fat, NO added oils? That would be my first thought. I'm sure others will chime in with suggestions.

Yes I am, pretty much no fat--everything I'm eating is based on the NutritionMD.org menus....

Not sure why you would be gaining. Doesn't seem you should be if you're 100% vegan, low fat. What about sugar? Refined carbs?

Only refined carbs would be nutrisweet sweetner that I use, diet jello (I know it's not vegan), and cool whip. Other than that, all whole foods, including Ezekial bread which has no gluten or flour in it.

Hi there,
I'm sorry to hear about the weight gain. I know that can be really frustrating and disheartening. I can think of a couple of reasons why it might have happened.

-- Increased quantity of grains/starches. These always make me gain weight. Try increasing fresh, raw vegetables instead, cut back on the grains/starches.

-- Increase in fruits can cause weight gain, too, just because of the sugar. I find that, for me, I have to be ultra-careful and get the bulk of my food (literally – the most volume) from fresh, raw vegetables, with much smaller portions left over for legumes, whole grains, fruits and nuts.

-- Increase in portion size w/o realizing it. The "eat all you want" approach can be a killer sometimes! Eat until satisfied, but not more. You should still have some room left in there.

-- The added fiber may be causing some extra bulk, if you're not used to it. That's a good thing, though, and will alleviate eventually. Another reason to keep increasing the vegetables! Drink lots of water, as well.

-- Falling victim to the "if it's vegan, it must be healthy" mindset, and eating vegan junk food, eg. cakes, cookies, dessert-type things; smoothies, etc.

I hope some of this is helpful. If you're NOT doing any of these, and you're still gaining weight, let us know and we'll keep brainstorming.

If you're still keeping the calories to the same range as before, along with the same activity level, my guess would be that your system is in the process of adjusting digestively. If you go back and check through some of the early posts on the kickstart, folks were gaining small amounts of weight (1-2 lbs) and also reporting digestive issues. That's the change in fiber content. Odds are that if you keep up the fiber and lots of water, it'll work itself out (literally). Keep an eye on fats (both added (oils) and intrinsic (nuts, avocado) as well.

Thank you for all of your replies and I'm glad I hung in there. Apparently I "whined off" some calories because my weight was down what I'd gained plus another half pound!
