Dr Barnard's 21 day kickstart book
Posted Sunday, May 8, 2011 at 5:17 PM
I know this has come up before in discussion but I have lost the thread as we are a talkative group and there is lots to search through - I think it may have been around the time we were discussing Dr Barnard being on TV. Anyway - I purchased the book at the end of the kickstart to help me keep me motivated and on track between April and October. I have been reading it and I want to highly recommend it (no - I am not being paid to say this ). For anyone new it explains the principles of the kickstart but it also has some good guidance for those of us that have done it before. I am picking up hints and ideas I missed or forgot during the kickstart. I kind of wish I had read this before starting the 'kickstart' not the other way around. I admit this may be partly related to age as I like books - something tangable to hold on to and refer back to, not just what I read on the computer screen. Same reason I buy vegan cookbooks although there are great websites with hundreds of recipes to choose from. This book is a great addition to my library and is complimentary to what I have learned from this kickstart website. I am also going to give it to my Mom and suggest she read it - not to change what she is eating as she is 83 and can eat what she wants - but to give her a greater understanding of what I am now eating and why. She has been my greatest family challenge as she is keeping well overall and still loves to cook for us (the family). I dont want to upset or insult her but she uses milk and cheese a lot. She understands the vegetarian part of my diet as I have not eaten meat for the past 15 years but cant get her head around the change to vegan. I think this might do it.

Hi Kiwi, I agree, its a great book to have in your personal library. I like books, and find it great when there is online support. In addition, there are two other books I found are helpful with Kickstart. First, is The Get Healthy, Go Vegan cookbook. Lots of good recipes. Great info on how to get started. Second, is Breaking the Food Seduction. I can not put this book down. It is really helping me take a look at my stubbling blocks and how to overcome cravings. A treasure trove of nutritional info. Not a surprise, both books are by Dr. Barnard.

This is probably my favourite. The only thing I would say is that maybe it shouldn't be called "weightloss kickstart" because it covers so much more than weightloss. So people with diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure etc. probably wouldn't realise that they could benefit from this book.

I have been looing at the food seducation book and thinking of reading it. I will definately get it now. Thanks...

I bought the Get Healthy Go Vegan cookbook for myself on the weekend (happy birthday to me and was going to give a copy of it to my friend for Mother's Day (single parent so "dad" wouldn't be honouring the day for her) but stopped myself because she's struggled with an eating disorder and I didn't want "weight loss" on the cover. I found a different one for her anyway, but I hear you, Theodore. I guess it speaks to how many of us are obsessed with "diets".

Kiwi, does the book have actual recipes and a plan to continue following? I haven't had a chance to look at a copy and that is one of things I was wondering about it.

Chapters 1-4 are background information about why this style of eating is good for you. Chapter 5 looks at a healthy menu (whats in and whats out), Chapters 6-9 follow the 21 day kickstart with something new to learn on each of the 21 days. The last part of the book has a suggested menu for each of the 21 days and then recipes to follow. What I have found useful for me is that I am picking up more tips about how to make my own menus and meals rather than relying on what was posted during the kickstart. Still it is there for those who want it.
