cheese billboard

PCRM recently put up an anti-cheese billboard in Green Bay. It has caused some controversy, and has had several articles written about it in the Milwaukee paper. Here is a link to one article

http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/130441848.html

Now it is being discussed on the radio. He is calling the group crazy vegans. All callers are supporting cheese of course - this is Wisconsin! I guess they haven't read China study, or books by Barnard, Essylstyn, etc. Sounds like they do not want to either (ignorance is bliss).

Listen now if you get a chance http://www.620wtmj.com/ There is a listen now tab to click on.

Good work Susan.

I just started listening. The host sounds like he's being paid by the food industry, not because he disagrees but because he is using phrases so commonly associated with Big Ag lobbyists.... nanny state, food police, personal responsibility.

And I'm sure Susan Levine will be pleased to hear that he holds her solely responsible for having placed the billboard and for the viewpoint of all PCRM.

Wow, read a few pages of comments about the article, and people are very attached to their cheese. Cheese was the hardest thing for me to let go, I so agree that it is addictive! But now it just looks like a glob of fat to me...finally cheese-free!

Haha! Glad you stumbled upon this story. It did create quite a stir. When people criticize us for not considering that Wisconsin's main source of revenue is cheese, I couldn't help but point out the obvious:

What good am I as a healthcare professional if I start filtering science through industry?

I often agree with this host, but certainly not today! The people that called in were all crazy about their cheese, and think that only the fat content is an issue. My hubby and two oldest daughters would fall into this category - they are cheese crazy, and the idea of a cheese-free pizza was shocking to them!

Cheese is a big moneymaker in the state. It is funny how so many things get banned, or there is discussion on banning them (the current one is everclear alcohol), but not cigarettes, cheese, and other big moneymakers!

The company that makes the foam cheesehead hats is upset because it's impacting their souvenir business. Sometimes, there are unintended impacts to our actions...

I heard from an insider that they were doing a bang-up business from our billboard. Which is fine - I'd much rather people wear cheese on their heads than in their arteries.

Interesting, given that they're all over the media saying they've asked for that aspect of the billboard to be changed...

Oh they have. And we did change it. I don't think they actually want to be associated with us. But the unexpected backlash consequence is that the owner has been on the news quite a bit and selling more hats than ever.

I suggested we go into business together.

Yes. That way, we can be healthy and yet still support the farmers. We'll be living the dream.

Susan, I love your comment. You have been making a name for yourself too. I have heard it on the radio and read it in the paper. Keep up the good work.

I was talking to a friend yesterday who said she loved cheese, but has been cutting back because of what was in it - I didn't ask exactly what she meant, but I told her my cheese elimination story. First the thought of rennet grossed me out, so I ate fat-free, rennet-free cheese, then I read a Christina Pierello book (Crazy Vegan Life) and learned about casein. This was followed up by books by Drs Barnard, Esselstyn, and Campbell to reinforce it.
