My journey's next steps...
Posted Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at 3:16 AM

My journey toward health and well being began many years ago. I have recently read 'The China Study' and Dr. Fuhrman's material as well as many of the doctors associated with PCRM. I am finally beginning to understand that health comes from not only deleting certain foods and habits from our lives ... but, just as importantly, including and incorporating certain foods and habits on a daily and consistant basis. I am having the most difficult time with family members who poo poo and sabotage my efforts. I am now committed to make it work for me...I am not on a crusade to change them...but would love to know how to kindly ask for their support in my choices. I'm a mom, grandma and great grandmother....and their education seems to usurp my years of experience.

It looks like there will be alot of good support right on this forum. I explained to my family that I am doing this for my health and for a kinder treatment of animals. They understand; but they will still be eating meat. When I had to incorporate a gluten free diet for my children's health my mother in law gave me a very difficult time. I told her that I know she loves me and my children and will support our efforts at health. That did the trick. Good luck to you. Your family loves you; they will support you. And, the positive changes will be evident to them.

Culture, food, and relationships weave an interesting web. I sat and thought about your (Storhaugen) dilemma and ended up asking the question "Why do we care so much what other people eat?" What a person eats is so personal, and yet we feel it's perfectly fine to judge people we neither know or care about.

In our own families sometimes it seems like a lose-lose situation. If we're eating the Standard American Diet and are fat and unhealthy, our families are concerned and beg us to change -- but if we make big changes that require us to eat differently than the rest of the family, there is concern there as well.

Cinnamon is right - we just have to make a plan, quietly follow it, and let the results speak for us.

I've been vegetarian since 2000, and vegan just recently. I've had family members know that I am going to waste away and die for lack of animal protein. "It's the only REAL protein." A couple years ago I finally decided I didn't want to spend time defending myself. Mostly I ignore their comments. Sometimes I'll tell them that my Doctor approves of my diet and leave it at that.
Dr. Barnard, Dr. Ornish, Dr. Fuhrman, - actually LOTS of Doctors approve of my diet.

I don't know why people feel free to comment on what I do or don't eat. I consider it a personal choice and not really up for discussion.

In line with the above thoughts....I desire to live healthfully and eliminate certain foods from my diet. This, unfortunately, does not eliminate my cravings, or temptations. I cook for my family who does not choose to eat this way, and who bring in foods that I would love to eat but know I shouldn't. I don't always win the battle. I would love to be able to cook healthy and not allow junk food and other harmful foods in the house. How does one keep a clean environment when you are the only one who cares?

That's a tough one! My husband is NOT vegan, not even vegetarian. He eats fish and chicken, and thankfully I'm not tempted by either. I do have occasional treats in the house for him, and I do sometimes have them myself. I try to keep it minimal, when I indulge I keep it to very small amount. I'm still a work in progress! AND I will say, when I buy things for him, I lean towards the things that aren't all that tempting for me.

This has been a long journey for me and my family. When I went vegetarian 17 years ago I owned a restaurant, was newly married and had 2 children ages 7 and 15. Here's a brief history. I took a full year to cut all meat from my diet. Fortunately, I'm a good cook so my family ate what I cooked which wasn't all that different other than no meat, fish, chicken, etc. When we ate out, they ate meat. Occasionally, someone would request meat and, yes, I cooked it. Fast forward 15 years...after attending the North American Vegetarian Fest in Johnstown, PA, I went vegan. I no longer bought or cooked meat. I cooked vegan and anyone that wanted something different had to purchase and prepare it themselves. (I still have one daughter at home and often have her boyfriend here as well). As of 2 months ago, my husband announced that he was "mo vegan", (more vegan than not) and my daughter has asked me to help her with this 21 day challenge which is why you see me here. Here's my advice, eat like your life depends on it, educate yourself, learn to cook well and don't preach. People will see the health benefits you enjoy and they'll want them as well.
