Problem with Soy
Posted Friday, September 3, 2010 at 11:39 PM

Hello,

I do not like soy products except edameme. What can I substitue, I know about almond and rice milk, I need a substitue for the yogurt.

Thanks,
Tracey

You could try coconut milk yogurt, though it is very high in fat. You could also just try not having it. For instance, if a meal calls for 1 cup of yogurt, have something else instead that would be comparable, perhaps homemade seitan, or black beans topped with salsa, oil-free hummus and veggies, or take a recipe from another day in the kickstart and duplicate it.

If you haven't omitted alot of salt and sugar from your diet, you might wait awhile and try soy again. When I started the last kickstart my taste-buds changed. But for now you might try a small amount of rice or almond milk as a substitute in a recipe. Smile

For protein sources other than soy (as opposed to soymilk and soy yogurt substitutes which other people have commented on) consider lentils. If you can find them, the small green lentils called "Lentilles du puy" are excellent. There's a Canadian organic brand that sells more cheaply than some others.
These particular lentils are great in soup (e.g. with celery, carrot, onion and rosemary), as a filler in a wrap sandwich (with lemon or lime or apple cider vinegar, grated carrot and radish) or as part of a salad.
You can "google" them for more recipe ideas.
I think they are the best lentils for people who are not enthusiastic about lentils!

Peanut yogurt is simply great. If you are not allegic to peanuts and like peanuts, it is worth trying! You can prepare even the vegan starter culture (called rejeuvelac) yourself.

http://sharan-india.org/recipes/peanut-milk/ is the recipe for peanut milk [Make sure you boil it].

Check out recipes 19 and 21 at http://sharan-india.org/vegan-recipes/healthy-kitchen-cd/ for the peanut yogurt. If you don't like it plain, follow the instructions in recipe 21 for tempering it.

For the starter, see recipe from http://sharan-india.org/vegan-recipes/healthy-kitchen-cd/

I'm allergic to soy - have tried introducing it back into my diet over the years and still allergic.

You don't have to have any form of soy on this plan if you don't want to. When I first did the Kickstart in January, I was coming off such a love of dairy that I didn't want to use any of the "fake milks" for at least a month, as I knew I would have the taste of cow still in my mouth.

I gradually started trying them after that first month, and now use oat milk and almond milk on my oatmeal, and soy milk to take my medications with...and have a splash of soy in my tea.

There are lots of alternate milks if you want to go that route. But soy is not required in any form to be a healthy vegan!

Coconut yogurt by So Delicious is really good although it can be kind of pricey. As far as fat content there are no added fats it's just the fat from the coconut. When it comes to milk there are so many non-dairy, oatmilk, hemp milk, almond milk, etc.
