What's the skinny of vitamins/supplements
Posted Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 5:43 PM

Hey All::: A few pages back there was a small discussion about vitamin B12 and calcium. I know that not all of you are qualified vitaminists (Ha!) but I know a lot of you have been vegans for a while and take supplements. Im not really into taking a bunch of stuff but I do want to make sure Im covered in the deficiency department. Could someone be kind enough to run down the items they are sure that as vegans we do not get and what they take to supplement it?

Thanks a million!

As a vegan, the only vitamin you can not get reliably in food is B12. I take a multi-vitamin with B12 every few days or so. If you are over the age of 50, you should be doing this vegan or not.

As for other supplements, this would depend on how balanced your diet is day to day. Again, that's true for anyone vegan or not. For example, if you do not consume a reliable source of calcium (leafy greens, supplemented plant milks, legumes) and you simply don't want to change, then sure, you should probably take a calcium supplement.

Some supplement choices would depend on what your healthcare provider recommends for you. If you are low in iron, you may need to supplement. If you are low in vitamin D, then you may need to supplement. But I would not do that arbitrarily.

I hope that helps!

This totally helps. I will go and get some B12.

Thanks Susan.
