Julie and Julia
Posted Thursday, April 8, 2010 at 12:25 PM
After watching the movie Julie and Julia I decided I could do that with McDougall recipes. I chose his Maximum Weight Loss program since I was having problems with the last 10 pounds. Since The March Kickstart ended I've only cooked out of this book. And it has been a blast!! I've found some recipes I didn't care for and many many more that are just great. And I've lost 5 of those pounds. I can't count the number of cookbooks I've bought because of the pretty pictures and then never cooked one recipe. I'm not doing that again. Now that I'm an entrenched McDougaller I know when I buy one of his books I'll cook every one of the recipes. As I've gone along I've written notes in the margins about the recipes and my feelings towards them. Glad to see some new posts to the forum. I check it every day but like others haven't been great about posting. With my Julie/Julia goal I've really been able to stay on track.

ROTFL, now that is funny!!! You know, I think I am going to jump on this bandwagon too! I am a recipe 'collector'. I cut, paste, print, copy whatever I see that sounds good. I put them into binders...and sometimes even try them . So today I am going to pull out those binders and start on page one. One recipe a day , one page at a time. Oh now this sounds like fun, Thanks!

I too have clipped a billion recipes and have a shelf full of cookbooks I have barely tried. When I got the Veganomicon it was my intention to do the Julie & Julia thing with it, but I still haven't done it. I am proud to say, though, that this year (since the January Kickstart) I have probably tried more recipes than I had in the whole past decade.

Yes, I'm a recipe collectors too. I was just getting them all organized and - bam - I started the Jan kickstart. So know I have 2 folders: 1) the tried recipes 2) the ones I want to try. The organized meat ones are in a box in a corner of the spare room. I should throw them out.

I've been trying to decide what to do about all my old recipes too. Thinking about selling at least some of the cookbooks to make room for all the new vegan ones! I started a notebook of recipes when I got on this plan in February, but it's already full so I guess I'm going to have to split it into 2 books! There are so many recipes online, but I like to print them out to use and because I am afraid that I will never be able to find the recipe again if I don't! LOL! Like someone else said, I have tried more new recipes in the last couple of months than I have in years! Fortunately most of them have been successful. It is a real adventure to begin a whole new way of eating!

A little update on the Julie/Julia project. I've really be able to stay on track with eating vegan while doing this. My weight continues to go down although much more slowly. And of course I decided that 10 pounds wasn't low enough--still have 10 to go after losing 7 since the March Quickstart ended. Some of the recipes I really haven't liked--have to eat the leftovers anyway! But most are very tasty. I've really enjoyed cooking during these last wintry days. Now that summer weather is quickly approaching that may change. I'll hit the salads section with the hot weather. Glad to hear so many are sticking with vegan eating. I feel so great and hope you all do too.

Congratulations on the follow-through, Lenlin! I don't have a McDougall cookbook. Have the meals taken you long to prepare, or are most of them pretty time-friendly?

Most of them take 1/2 hr. or so. Some cook longer (oven). I'm rereading the book and finding I'm not following the plan as well as I thought. Not doing enough salads and too much of the main dishes but weight is still going down (slowly) so I'll try to ramp up the greens without feeling too guilty for past lapses. I did have to buy several spices at first but now have them so find this way of eating very cost effective--especially feeling so good!! Oh, there is a McDougall 30-minute cookbook too. I'm trying it next.

Linda - I've been loosing weight slowly too. 5 lbs. a month which is better then adding weight. I usally keep it simple. But I have tried some recipes from the Vegan Express by Nava Atlas. I've liked them all so far. What I like about it, is she gives you menu suggestions to go with it. When I tried a cole slaw recipe the red cabbage bled all over the green cabbage and pineapple. It was good, but it looked weird. Next time will add the red cabbage at serving time.

Blueberry's play the same trick as the red cabbage! I do think most of the McDougall recipes I've tried taste wonderful but they sometimes look a little smishy. Maybe I overcook but even when I look at vegan recipes on line with pictures I think most look that way. That's taken a little getting use to.
