RE: Anyone gearing up for the new Kickstart?

Definitely!!! I have tried the kickstart twice and although I haven't successfully been 100% compliant, I make significant changes each time. Even sticking with the general principles has made me feel better and lose a little weight (haven't weighed myself, but I'm guessing I've lost around 5-8 pounds). Since today is my birthday (41st) I plan on making this kickstart a beginning to better habits for real, including not just food, but also getting back to regular exercise and stress management (which I need badly!!!) With any luck, I'll convince my mom and dad to join me. Djuna

I'm really looking foward to the next kickstart. I've been trying to follow the Mcdougall maximum weight loss program for the past week or so, to give me an idea of portion size (it's tough since it's so strict). I've also started using the 'lose it' calorie, nutrient counter, just to see what I'm really eating. Does anyone know the recommended daily suggestions for sodium, etc? I'm really trying to cut back on the sodium, I don't ever add, but it's amazing what is in some food items.

If you have cardio risk (hypertension or chance for it), then you should stay at somewhere in the 1000 to 1200 mg range for daily sodium intake - more if you are sweating a lot, such as exercising in hot weather. That's one reason we rarely purchase any pre-made food items. We buy some cereals, occasional crackers, almond milk, frozen veggies (especially in winter when fresh are expensive and not great) and like that. We buy no salt added canned diced tomatoes and turn them into sauces and such as needed ourselves so we can monitor the sodium content ourselves. We do add salt when cooking but when you're adding 1/2 tsp of salt to pot of chili (which has no other added salt anywhere), it isn't a whole lot - 1/2 tsp has about 1000 mg sodium so we're talking about 100 mg or less per serving (depending on serving size). Even two servings in a meal isn't bad. We also make sure to get in plenty of potassium rich foods as well - a 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 ratio of potassium to sodium is the target for healthy blood pressure and all. --Deb R

I'm planning on participating in the new kickstart (and dragging the whole family with me ^.^). I've stayed vegan since the one in Jan 11, although there have been some tough moments. I miss saag paneer so badly it hurts, lol. I've tried a dozen vegan recipes but can't seem to get it to taste remotely like what is served at my favorite Indian restaurant. *sigh* I'm planning on sticking closely to the recipe plan this time. I want the help with creating a more balanced diet and the encouragement to actually cook. I really don't like cooking and am hoping to change my attitude. Instead of having so many sandwiches... I've not been on here in months, college and children have been about all I can handle. It's really great to see that so many people continued to post between the kickstarts.

I, too, had been hoping that the new forum would have been started already ... I've been coming around here hopeful every day! I need support all the time, not just for 21 days every quarter. I wish they'd keep this going consistently so that the forum wouldn't dwindle down so much in between kickstarts.

And is getting going pretty quickly. We went out a week or so ago and scored a couple new vegan cookbooks at serious discount because the Borders bookstore near us is closing. --Deb R

Maybe start a Yahoo group spin off for the rest of the time between kickstarts. Something that would be available ALL the time and might even attract other folks to the kickstart if they're looking for vegan support groups/information/help - Yahoo has a lot of folks looking for groups.--Deb R

These message boards continue to be available. Several of us have been posting since the last kickstart. It just moves to a new board once the new one starts.

You should have received a grocery list for staples today. I did.
