Doctors Orders

Hello, I am happily retired senior with osteoarthritis..my doctor gave me your website and has advised me to go vegan cutting out anything white, all dairy products and red meat but have no clue how to transition this change into my life. Is there truly a diet plan low in protein to keep my arthritis from progressing and if so, where do I start? Is there anti-inflammatory meal plans to choose from on your 21 day Jump Start Program that I can adapt ..I am willing to try and love to cook! Thanks; looking forward to hearing from anyone that might be able to help with ideas. Smile

Hi, gramma (may I call you that?),

So glad you're here, and that you have a doctor who's willing to use food as medicine. When I'm not using dairy products, my severe arthritis pain virtually disappears, and sometimes I go weeks without any pain at all, which felt like a miracle when it first happened.

You might want to take a look at http://www.nutritionmd.org/index.html and http://drmcdougall.com/ to get a good, quick education about this way of doing things. Also, any of Dr. Barnard's or Dr. McDougall's books are great; I've read almost all of them! I especially liked Dr. Barnard's book about diabetes, even though I don't have that condition, myself, and Dr. McDougall's "The McDougall Plan".

If there's anything specific you need help with, you can also ask here, and folks'll offer a bunch of help.

Love,

Serene

Hi Serene, Yes, you may call me gramma. Thank you so much for your comments and help. The sites you suggested will really help me and already opened my eyes! No wonder I need to clean up my act, lose weight and get my body back to a healthy state which ultimately will decrease the problems with my OA. My ? is: are the natural protein of all the foods on the vegan diet plan plant based and not animal? If so, does this mean the foods will not increase inflammation? Any tips on how to cut out eggs..have always loved eggs? HappyNewYear Exclamation Evelyn

Yes, correct. All your nutrients will be derived from plants on a vegan diet -- proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals.

That's my understanding and experience, yes, and both Dr. McDougall and Dr. Barnard say that their patients who cut way down on fat and animal products have huge reductions in things like arthritis pain.

Happy new year to you, too! My kid turns 18 tomorrow, too, so it's a big day around here.

Each use for eggs has a different egg solution. Here are a few thoughts:

For baking, try the list at http://www.vegcooking.com/vegcooking-eggreplace.asp. I tend to use mashed banana, but they have lots of other ideas.

For scrambled eggs, try tofu scramble (there's an excellent recipe at http://theppk.com/recipes/dbrecipes/index.php?RecipeID=110, but I usually just sautee onions, then add crumbled tofu, salt, and turmeric -- I'm a simple-foods kind of girl most of the time.

For quiche, this is, bar none, the best recipe I've used: http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2006/12/mini-crustless-tofu-quiches.html

For mayo, I use this recipe, and just blend everything together:

One 12-oz. block of lite silken tofu
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1.5 tsp granulated garlic
1.5 tsp dried minced onion
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp prepared mustard
1/4 tsp Tabasco

Hi Evelyn,

I look at the next 21 days as an opportunity for a makeover and I am most curious how I will feel on this eating program. I love my fish and lean poultry. Knowing there is an endpoint - January 21st, I can accomplish anything! You can too!

Hi Gramma, am so jealous of you. Your doctor is behind you in this. My doctor absolutely does not want me to be vegan. She says I won't get enough protein. Oh, for an enlightened physician.

One of the best ways I have experienced for egg replacement...especially with baking and vegie loafs is substituting 1 Tablespoon of fresh ground flaxseed with 1/4 cup of water and then adding it to our recipe. It is a great way to get your Omega 3s.
And getting rid of ALL dairy and refined sugars will make your OA pain disappear...what a relief that will be for you!!

CATHYLC - Find a new Doctor!! My husband's cardiologist, when asked about diet, handed him a copy of a the cover of Dean Ornish's book on reversing heart disease, which is very low fat vegetarian. AND he said it is how he eats.

My doctor, while not vegetarian or vegan, absolutely supports my choice, asks about it and marvels at the numbers on my annual check up. Her exact words, "If all my patients were like you I'd be out of business." I think you can find a Doctor who would support you and not preach that you have to eat animals to get enough protein!

I am 58 years old and nobody believes that I am on NO MEDICATIONS! I went to a new chiropractor recently and of course they ask about what medications you are on and when I said "none" they didn't believe me. People my age are suppose to be on SOMETHING! Don't fall for it, you can be healthy without supporting the huge pharmaceutical companies.

You're in the right place to do just that!

Hi Gramma (following others lead Very Happy)-

I had the greatest gift handed to me - I was part of a group from the company I work for selected to attended Dr. McDougall's 10-day Program. It changed my life.

The program really is easy to follow and has great recipes as well as meal plans. You should visit the website drmcdougall.com.

After following the plan for the initial 10-days, my blood pressure, weight, cholesteral, and waist measurement all dropped dramatically. All the participants saw the same kind of results and from all of our on-going communication with each other, the results are still happening.

You're worth the changes that you are making towards a healthier lifestyle!!! Can't wait to hear of your progress.
