Hypothryoidism and Soy
Posted Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 12:53 PM

Is there anyone out there who has hypothroidism. If so, is it true you cannot eat soy products. I get mixed answers all the time and I am so confused about it. Thanks in advance.

I don't have hypothyroidism, but I am a thyroid cancer survivor and I have no thyroid left, and my doctor said that you'd have to gorge yourself constantly on whole-soy foods to cause yourself any damage, because the studies people often point to were done with megadoses of soy nutrients.

I have thyroid cancer too and was also told by my endocrinologist that unles I ate an absurd amount of soy, it wouldn't affect me.

I am hypothyroid. (I took radioactive iodine to get rid of a whopping case of Graves disease.) My endo has only cautioned me against eating massive amounts of soy AND against eating soy close to the time I take my thyroid med. in the evening.

Everything in moderation.

I also had radioiodine for a severe case of unresponsive graves disease nearly 2 years ago and have done moderately extensive research on the soy debate. the only time you should refrain from soy is within the first 4 hours of taking thyroid hormone (synthroid)because it can interfere with absorption. like everyone else has pretty much said, everything in moderation. i have soy in some form almost daily (meat analogs to soy milk on cereal or in coffee). it's a great source of protein! i honestly believe the negative press is coming from proponents of the meat and dairy industry. hope this helps ease your mind a bit.
