Diabetic Vegan

I'm excited to participate in my 3rd Kickstart! I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes in April of 2009. Dr. Barnard's book on reversing diabetes was one of the first tools I bought to help me deal with this disease. At first, I just didn't want to go vegan. I loved meat and dairy too much, and thought I couldn't live without them. Nothing changed much until the fall, when I participated in last year's kickstart. All I can say is wow! Over this past year and being faithful to this lifestyle change, I've lost 65 pounds, and by A1C has gone from 8.3 to 5.4 I've been under 5.7 for a year now, with no drugs. Don't be afraid to do this! Although I can only attest to how my body has responded, Dr. Barnard's (and many others) have proven that going vegan can greatly improve or completely reverse diabetes. Since last March, I've been blogging about my experiences at www.makingallthingsnew.com.

Fantastic! This is my first experience. I've been frightened to fail at fixing some of the recipes I've found. Any tips from you to get me where you are now?...Elizabeth

Elizabeth, Don't be afraid to try new things! Yep, you'll try a new recipe and it will end up in the trash (it happened to me this weekend). But that's only happened once or twice. I still haven't acquired a taste for tofu. I try to make everything an adventure, which helps a lot. I never cooked with lentils before, but now they have become one of my favorite ingredients. Unbelievably healthy, and they give you a "meatiness" that satisfies your non-vegetarian family and friends. I have a recipe for Lentils with Wine Glazed Vegetables on my blog under main courses. Everyone who has tried this recipe really loves it, and it has become a staple. As it turns out, I made it last night! The vegetarian times website has a ton of great recipes, but some include dairy. Lastly, in my opinion, Dr. Barnard and his team are spot on in taking this approach to diabetes. It takes hard work and discipline, but the results are such a gift. My local hospital has asked me to begin speaking about my experience with this approach to reversing diabetes. My first talk is in about a month.

Seedthrower - you're an inspiration! Did you increase your exercise to maintain your great A1C numbers? Or was it strictly by diet alone? Just curious... Cheers and welcome aboard!

Good question as exercise increases insulin sensitivity, along with low fat diet and decreased bodyfat stores. Lani

Hi Mariberry, Thanks! In the beginning, I wasn't really exercising at all. I tricked myself into believing that I was so active in my job that it would be enough. Wrong. My primary exercise is walking, which I do for about 45-60 minutes per day. During the winter months, I join a local gym. Diet and exercise go hand in hand. Paul

More a question than a "reply." Did the additional carbs spike your glucose? I know that more veggies help mine be lower. But eating quinoa, chick peas, brown rice, and many other whole grains really cause my glucose to rise. And I feel it quickly. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I went out for my walk thinking about your great question. I'm no expert, but my understanding is that, as you lose weight, you'll develop greater insulin sensitivity, so the spikes won't be as great. I opened a new forum on the glycemic index. Not all grains sill cause big rises in glucose levels. I don't know a great deal about it, so let's see what the experts post. If you haven't tried Dreamfields pasta, pick some up. It is a wonderful product and a serving is only 5 carbs. You and those you make it for will not notice any difference in taste/texture. When I started changing my diet in April 2009, I could only find it on line. Now, it's in every store in my town. If you can't find it, go to the dreamfields website, where they have a store locator. This pasta has been a godsend to me and brings some normalcy to my diet.

These forums take a lot of time to read, but I'm afraid I'll miss something important if I don't take the time to read what I can. Y'all are so helpful. I hope this thought keeps rolling and all of you with the health benefits keep letting me know. I need to get ready for tomorrow, but..Elizabeth

I was diagnosed in 2009 with type II and was immediately put on two injections - byetta an insulin - along with 1,00 mg of Metformin.. I went thru Dr. Hans Diel's CHIP program which I believe SAVED my life!! THIS will help me maintain my new found freedom... I'm off ALL meds! Now here eis my dilema... every day without fail between 10:30 and 11:30 I have a sugar DROP... I maintain between 117 and 133 daily but at these times I dive down to the 80 and mid 70's... any suggestions?

Oatmeal holds me until lunch. Are you taking a snack for about 10AM? If I need it, I'll have a coffee break with toast/real fruit spread...Elizabeth

I do have a couple of protein bars in my desk, just in case. Maybe someone else might have some ideas for snacks?

Every person is different, and it would be good to get your doctor's opinion on your morning lows. To me, though, I would say that there's nothing wrong with being in the 70's-80's, unless you have some symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). I routinely test in this range, but that's after losing a lot of weight, daily exercise, etc. I have yet to experience any symptoms of hypoglycemia.

I was wondering how everyone's glucose testing has been going. For those new to vegan eating, have you noticed a drop in your numbers?

I started the March Kickstart and then my DH and I fell off the wagon for part of the summer, so, technically, we're new to this again. During our time off of it, my blood sugars soared right back up to their previous highs. Since starting back this time, my fasting BS has gone from the high 180's, then to the 160's, then 140's, to this morning's fasting one of 128. Since I am also battling multiple teeth abcesses right now, while waiting for the dentist to get back to me with his treatment recommendations for my teeth, and am on antibiotics, I was very pleasantly surprised with that reading this morning. So I know, as before, that this is the right path to follow.

I am not taking off the weight and I would love to know if you would share exactly what you eat everyday. would you be willing? thank you, kc Hi KC, I'll do my best. When I first started moving towards a vegan diet, I used Dr. Barnard's "rules" exclusively. I had amazing results, and over time, I reached my ideal weight and my dietician called "tight control" of my glucose levels. Since that time, I've been simply avoiding meat and dairy, and that's been about it. It's hard to tell you exactly what I eat each day because I vary it so much. I eat a lot of beans, pretty much every day. Broccoli, for some reason, brings my numbers down in a good way, so I try to have some in my salad each day. Overall, I don't any fast food, avoid processed food, no meat, no dairy. I do pay attention to carbs, but don't watch it closely. When its all said and done, get a copy of Barnard's book. I think if you follow the guidelines he lays out, you'll do well. AND, be sure you exercise. Diet and exercise go hand in hand. Anyone else have any ideas for KC?

thank you for the response. I did well last time because I felt so good, I was doing a lot of bike riding. This week, I did great all day and then blew it having vegan ice cream and that turned into full scale no, no's. well, this is saturday and I weighed. It is the same as Monday. No loss or gain. I guess that's a blessing of such. So I am evaluating what I ate and I believe the whole grain bread does the same thing I always thought it did. I think it triggers me to binge. Before, in March, I did not eat any bread. The only grain I had was oatmeal. I think that is what I'm going to do this week. Oatmeal, beans, veggies. Be blessed, kcv
