Calorie counts?
Posted Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 6:59 PM
I'm new to all this, but I have a (maybe strange) concern - I added up the calories for the first day of the kickstart, and got 909. I am not doing the Kickstart to lose weight, and I don't think that 900 is enough calories to keep me at my current weight. I am 5'3" and weigh about 110 pounds, and have a moderately active lifestyle. My doctor and WebMD both recommend that I consume about 1400 calories in order to maintain my weight. Are 'plant calories' different from 'meat calories'? Do people get more energy from a calorie on a vegan diet than on a regular diet? If not, are there any suggestions on what I can do (other than eating 24/7 or stuffing my face with candy, lol) to keep to this diet and not lose weight?

It looks like the calories are measured per 1-cup serving. Maybe just eat bigger servings.

A couple suggestions would be to eat larger portions, eat more whole grains, and add nuts. Also you should know that I am officially jealous!!

Just eat more. Don't worry about calories.

If you run out of chips and beer, pasta! also add nuts and/or avocado to salads that you eat if you like.

oh, good idea about the avocados! I don't usually eat them because they are so fattening, but I really like them. Won't be hard to start eating more of them, yummy! I don't usually drink beer, but you know what's another good, similar snack? Red wine and popcorn. I know it sounds strange, but really - a nice Cabernet and very lightly salted popcorn taste really good together. and if you add dark chocolate to the mix... okay, now I'm hungry...

Oh my! I wish I had your 'problem'. I need to lose about 90 pounds! Wine and dark chocolate both contain benefits (antioxidants I think?) What a delicious way to get healthy!

I have no problems getting too many calories on a Vegan diet, but if you want to add calories that is easy to do. Like already mentions the fat lines, but also you can get a lot of calories from starchy foods, sweet potatoes are very healthy and have a good amount of calories, also brown rice. Since you are a little person you probably don't have a large appetite, but adding a protein smoothie can help too. Banana protein powder natural peanut butter soy milk flax seed frozen berries Drink two 8oz glasses a day can really boost your calories, and also help maintain your muscle or even build if you are working out

Look to the Doctors. Many of the leading experts tell us not to worry about the calories, (Dr. Esselstyn). I'd concentrate on nutrition and, if you're hungry, eat more at meals and make healthful snack choices. I have a banana or apple slices with peanut butter, a handful of nuts and a glass of red wine while cooking dinner, plain popcorn in the evening...whatever healthy foods you enjoy!
