What are some really truly faux meat products (does not like anything by morning star or boca) that taste fantastic and are reasonably priced?

help because I will be making more vegan meals but he needs meat in his diet at least 3 days a week to work with me! (he is a very meat and potatoes man)

My omnivore husband likes Gardein products. His 2 favorites are the chicken scallopini and the chicken tenders. They're vegan and very good. A bit pricey, but I think they're worth it not cooking seperate meals and they're healthier for him than the real deal.

Tofurky Beer Brats and Tofurky Italian Sausage. CRAZY REAL.

My omnivore husband joined me as a vegetarian not too long ago. He really likes Gimme Lean Ground Beef Style. I use it as a “sausage” topping for pizza and in marinara sauces for pasta. It is delicious if you season it up a bit. I add chili powder and some sea salt when I cook it up.

My first "attempt" with faux meat was Tofurkey's Italian sausage. Well, OK, but didn't buy again. My favorite "meats" are by Field Roast. I like spicy and their Mexican Chipotle "sausages" are truly outstanding! My Safeway carries the 4-pack at $6.99, but I buy when they go on sale for $4.99 (reasonable) and I stock up. They can be frozen for up to a year, and once thawed, have a 45-day fridge life. I cut them up and throw into my veggie fry pan concoctions, along with cumin, chili powder, and Mrs. Dash's "table blend". (Sometimes just have a few bites of them cold!) I don't use faux meats often, but I also buy Morningstar's "Crumbles" and "Chik'n Strips" on occasion and add to salads and other dishes.

I forgot about Field Roast. It is very good. A bit expensive so I consider it a treat and not part of our regular food budget. Also, Gimme Lean Sausage is very tasty.

Honestly, we don't buy any of the meat substitutes because no one in my family likes any of them. My husband eats meat and if he feels like eating meat at any particular meal, he will just cook a piece of meat to have on the side of whatever we're having that day. He likes most of what I cook though and more often than not, will just eat what the rest of us are eating now. Smile

I hear ya. Though none of the faux products need to be a part of your diet - and often they are way low on fiber which can mess with your calorie density - when it comes to keeping others at the table happy, these can be an amazing tool!

Trader Joe's also makes an Italian sausage that I think beats Tofurky brand. There's also a chorizo you can find there that is high in fat, but a little goes a long way and a sprinkle of it can flavor a whole pile of rice and veggies!

My omni husband loves seitan. I make it homemade so it's very inexpensive. We both prefer it over the store bought faux meats. You can buy the vital wheat gluten from Amazon if you can't find it locally, and I find it to be cheaper on Amazon anyway. I make big batches about once a week. You can use different flavorings to make it more like chicken or beef, etc. There are some recipes available online, but my go-to quick and easy recipes come from Sarah Kramer's 'La Dolce Vegan'.

My carnivore husband and I really like the Field Roast Smoked Apple Sage "sausages". When I feel like a meat and potatoes dinner, I like that with potatoes and cabbage. Also, check out The Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes Cookbook (http://www.amazon.com/Vegetarian-Meat-Potatoes-Cookbook/dp/1558322051). That has helped me a lot. I don't think it is strictly vegan (I haven't looked since I've been worrying about vegan), but I'm sure you can sub vegan ingredients for most things easily enough. Maybe your library has it to try. Field Roast products are our favorites. The Apple Sage is our tops too. Also try Light Life Salmami and bologni. Soyrizo tastes great, my husband grew up eating the animal version and says this taste just as good. Marinate seitan then grill it, it has the texture that a meat eater loves.

I wish my husband would try seitan. He saw me making it one day and refused to try it. Rolling Eyes I know he'd like it if I could get him to eat it.

Oh, and I buy vital wheat gluten in bulk from our natural foods store and it's way cheaper than buying it by the box. Wink
