I LOVED The Kind Diet ~Have been pescatarian for quite some time....but today will venture into total vegan. Excited to start, but admit it seems a bit overwhelming....Anyone else feel this way?

It sounds overwhelming, but once you get started the reality is not that overwhelming. It really is just about the easiest way to eat.

Like fast food? Nothing faster than grabbing an apple !!

Hi ms. Newbie.

I started this way of eating in March. It is a step at a time, and the monitors of this site are very helpful.

I will help you too if I can.

Very Happy

Thanks, Renee~It's been a great day....Thanks for your encouragement.
I do have one question......Is a glass of red wine out of the question?

The reason we are here, and why there are 20,000 other people here, is because we need each other! So don't feel bad about being overwhelmed.

Also, alcohol is not out of the question.

I was first pescetarian for 2-3 years, then strict vegetarian for a little over 3 years, and am now trying to cut out the dairy, etc. I can't say I am 100% committed to no animal products yet, but I would like to be eating in that manner 95% of the time. Smile My hangup has always been cheese and ice cream, I love them. But I am lactose intolerant anyway, and it has gotten worse of late, so I am finally willing to make a real effort to cut them out of my daily diet. Some things I've found easy enough to sub for, but we are coming up on Restaurant Week in Philly, which is always a challenge. The prix-fixe menus are very limited and it is hard to find one with a vegetarian option, let alone vegan, and I do enjoy trying a new upscale restaurant with friends. It will definitely be difficult.

Maybe Horizons on S. 7th Street will participate. Excellent upscale dining.

Are you able to ask the chef to grill veggies and add them to brown rice? Years ago while traveling I have meal after meal of a veggie burger. Finally I told the waiter that I just couldn't eat another and he said that the chef could fix just about anything. Grrr!

Also remember, these restaurant weeks come around at least once a year. It will be back. If you can stick to this 3 weeks, you will be so pleased!

The first time I took a trip after beginning a vegan lifestyle I was on a bus with 50 other people going to 3 states. I took snacks with me but we weren't always sure where we would eat lunch & dinner. Almost everywhere there was pasta with marinara sauce. I just asked if it had cheese in the sauce & requested that no cheese come with mine & for nothing to be put on my bread. Italian bread doesn't usually have milk or egg products in them. Other times we ate Chinese or Mexican. With that there is a little more freedom of choice.

I have been on and off a vegan diet since age 50. Now I am 56. I have done Weimar in Auburn CA, I did McDougall ten day up in Santa Rosa, recently, I have completed 2 CHIP(coronary heart improvement programs) started by Hans Diehl. I like the Sacramento Food Coop for hot buffets, and cold salads to take out. I have joined Soil Born Farms and received a basket of farm produce weekly(too much for one person with limited kitchen and storage space.) I just keep plugging away. I collect vegan cookbooks, health books as I find them.

I love this program. I am making a point of preparing some of the recipes. I am full. I do not feel excessively hungry.

To the newbies, I say welcome on the journey to health, well-being, good eating, good nutrition and newly energized bodies. So many people in this country have gone before us: McDougall, Ornish, Diehl, T.Colin Campbell, etc, etc. So the path is there, Dr. Barnard is charming in person. He is bright, capable, committed, a visionary. I am glad there are so many folks ahead of me on the path to life and health.
