Help me find a Cookbook
Posted Friday, January 1, 2010 at 11:12 AM
Hi everyone. I'm a family practice physician and I've been trying to transition to a Vegan diet for awhile. I joined this to get more recipe ideas. I haven't got any Vegan cookbooks because they all seem to emphasize cupcakes! I want a cookbook that combines whole foods (meaning no white flour, white rice, sugar etc) with no animal products. It doesn't make any sense to me to give up all animal products and then eat lots of processed products.

Hi Caroline, Yeah, vegan cupcakes are very popular! But there are healthier-focused vegan cookbooks out there. Dr. Barnard's books have great recipes (many of which are included on this site and Nutrition MD). Dr. Joel Fuhrman's Eat to Live and Eat for Health books both have great recipes. (Eat for Health is a 2-volume set.) I should note these are mostly vegan, but he does include "starter" recipes with some lean meat, which are phased out. You might also like these cookbook authors: Robin Robertston: She's my favorite vegan cookbook author. Her latest is 1000 Vegan Recipes, but she also has Quick-Fix Vegetarian (though it's 100% vegan), and Vegan Planet. I love all of these books. She emphasizes whole foods, though she does include some white flour, sugar, etc. But it's easy to modify to your own taste and skip the more decadent recipes--which are great to have for company or special occasions. I think Dr. Barnard wrote the intro to one of her books, if I remember correctly. Nava Atlas: She has several books, most recently Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons. Like Robertson, she's sometimes calls for flour or sugar or something, but is mostly whole-foods focused, and easily adaptable. I also like Mark Bittman's How to Cook Everything Vegetarian (I just skip or modify the nonvegan recipes--he includes substitutions for most things in the intro). And Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian (ditto re: skipping or modifying recipes with dairy). And there are great vegan blogs. A bunch of people have already mentioned SusanV's Fat-Free Vegan blog, but if you haven't seen that, it's here: http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/ Hope that helps!

Wow, Thanks for all these suggestions. I'll look into them. I'm hoping to find sources that I don't need to adapt.

Hi Caroline - Any of Dr. McDougall's cookbooks are awesome - really good for everyday cooking and most recipes include ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. Colleen Patrick-Goudreau has a few. The Vegan Table is really good. Going to Amazon and typing in "vegan cookbooks" is how I got some of my favorites. Also the website [url]fatfreevegan.com has also become one of my favorite websites. Good luck with your journey. Maryel

I teach transitioning for people changing their dietary lifestyle and "what's a good cookbook?" is the number one question. Cookbooks are so personal to one's own tastes as well as cooking skills. Before you invest in a bunch of cookbooks that may have a handful of recipes you'll use, hit the internet! Vegnews is a magazine that has a varied selection of recipes on their site but if you just search "vegan recipes" or even specific recipes or ingredients with "vegan" include in the search you will be amazed how much you'll find. Just make sure to save or print the ones you like so you don't forget them!

My favorite cookbook of all times is Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone by Deborah Madison. Most of the recipes are Vegan and those that include cheese can be easily altered. Seriously...I couldn't do without it.

Also, if you take the quiz on the kickstart home page, you get a 10% off coupon for the PCRM store, where there are many great cookbooks, including several that are half off right now.

My favorites (so far) are "The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen" by Donna Klein (lots of great recipes in that one) and "Veganomicon" by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero. I just got Veganomicon a couple of weeks ago and have only made the Baja-Style Tempeh tacos and the Pineapple-Cashew-Quinoa stir fry so far but those were both great!

WOW! You've listed all the basics. I might add "Yellow Rose Recipes" I like it because it has a lot of good basic recipes for gravies and sauces and "cheese", a great recipe for parmesan cheese. Another good one that has some super simple and some more elaborate recipes is "Skinny Bitch in the Kitch." They have turned many home cooked favorites into vegan alternatives. "Yellow Rose Recipes" I haven't had it long and I want to try every recipe in it. The subtitle is "Over 120 Quick and Delicious Vegan Creations with Kick." I know someone posted it earlier but fatfreevegan.com is an awesome place to search for recipes. I go there frequently.

I love cookbooks! Luckily I can feed this addiction because I run a specialty food store where we sell cookbooks! I lugged home about 7 of them this week! My favorite vegetarian author is Robin Robertson. Her recipes are mostly whole foods, if I remember correctly...and she has a good cooking technique. My favorite book of her's wasn't mentioned above, which is Fresh From the Vegetarian Slow Cooker. I've loved every recipe I tried. I don't know if they are all vegan, but they all use lots of fresh foods. I also really enjoy Dreena Burton, Isa Moskowitz (not always the healthiest choice from a whole foods perspective, but always tasty), Christina Pirello, and Nava Atlas. And SusanV's fatfreevegan.com site is great!

I have found some great recipes in Dr. Neal Barnard's books. I have 5 of his books and all of them have wonderful recipes at the end of each. I just had macaroni and "cheese" for lunch from one of his books. It's made with nutritional yeast, which is a good way to get that B12 in the diet.

I just ordered "The Simple Little Vegan Slowcooker" from this site. Used my 10% discount for answering the quiz question correctly! Looks like a good little book and I love my Crock Pot!!

My favorite so far is Veganyumyum.com I knew about the website and the iphone app first, but then when I went to buy a cookbook I ended up getting the Vegan Yum Yum cookbook too. I have to have photos to see what it's going to look like before I'll try anything and this one has it. The only caviat is that she does use "limited" flour and sugar in some of her recipes.

I have been vegan for over 3 months. My go to cookbooks for the everyday cooking is Sarah Kramer's How it all Vegan, La Dolce Vegan and the Garden of Vegan. Great books!! For the fancier meals/holiday cooking, I like Colleen Patrick Goudreau's Vegan Table.

I love "Veganomicon" for everyday cooking (very healthy) and I also really like "Vegan Lunchbox," which I consider to have some easier meals, especially during your transition. As far as baking goes, I love the cookbook "Babycakes," in which all the recipes are vegan and most are also gluten-free and sugar-free.

I second the Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone, plus the Moosewood series (both of which have a lot of vegan options), and I'd like to plug the cookbook for my old CSA in Illinois where I was a shareholder for over 12 years: Farmer John's Cookbook: The Real Dirt on Vegetables. It's not vegan but there is great info on vegetables and great recipes in it. It's an organic and biodynamic farm. Here's the link. http://www.angelicorganics.com/ao/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=130&Itemid=180 You can also get it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Farmer-Johns-Cookbook-Real-Vegetables/dp/1423600142

Speaking of CSAs, I forgot I also have a CSA cookbook that I used more in the summer than I do now, but it is called "Asparagus to Zucchini" and it is wonderful! It's organized in alphabetical order by the veggie, and each veggie includes information on how to cook and store it as well as additional helpful information, then some favorite recipes. It also is not vegan, but there are tons of vegan recipes. I love it.
