Are you losing weight on vegan diet?

I am dedicated to embracing a vegan lifestyle, but I also am very obese. I started the vegan challenge early and have already lost 2 pounds. I'm happy to say the weight I gained over the holidays is off, and I am determined to take off a lot of weight in 2010. I'd be interested in knowing how others are going on the weight loss journey during the challenge. (I should note that I took off inches in the last year, and I do work out on the ellyptical, treadmill, etc. I also am getting back to strength training.)

I was vegetarian for 15 years..a very overweight vegetarian. (Damn that cheese!) Since going vegan I've lost 50 pounds and continue, albeit slowly, to lose steadily. It took me 50 years to put on the pounds, I can be patient with taking them off. Do vegan for health, not weight, and your body will find the right balance.

Kauai - it sounds like you have a really great plan put together already, especially with the exercise. That is wonderful. I too am obese and need to lose about 90 pounds. It will be great to see how we both do. I am determined to be a vegan for health reasons first and foremost and weight loss/fat loss would be a great benefit. I have fibromyalgia and am too sore and tired to exercise - but that is one of my goals to become more active as I can tolerate it. Vegan first, exercise next. Good luck to you on your journey too!

I have been eating vegan for 6 days now. I love it! I also hope to lose 10-15 pounds in the process. I hear others say they have lost weight. How quickly will I/could I see results?

I've been vegan for 2 years and I can easily gain weight if I'm not careful about eating too much fat and processed foods. I followed the McDougall diet in the last half of 2008 and lost almost 20 lbs in about 4 months but then I got lazy. I've gained 7 back so now I'm looking forward to eating well during 2010 to help me slim down.

Hello, Everyone. I'm looking forward to dropping some weight, too. In fact, I have my heart set on eventually dropping 30 to 40 pounds. However, for now, I'd be thrilled to just see the needle on the scale quiver! On a related note...does anyone know if we are to limit fat in our diet to a certain amount? I can't seem to find a specific number mentioned on the site. Perhaps I've missed something. Manxie

You will lose weight easily with a healthy, low fat, plant based vegan diet of WHOLE FOODS, not processed junk. Check out Dr. McDougall's web site it is loaded with FREE information on how to get started. The McDougall Diet is based on whole grains (oats, barley, rice), starchy veg (sweet potatoes, potatoes, yams), fresh fruit, Vegetables, Beans, peas, lentils,and so much more. He does not allow oils. I made the vegan switch back in November and I've already lost 15 pounds. I've been "maintaining" over the holidays though... vegan cookies are good! lol I'm excited about this kick start to get more recipe ideas. I'm very overweight and disabled, so I can't get out there and exercise. I really believe that this is my only chance to slim down. I may not stay vegan forever (though I really enjoy it, so who knows), but eliminating temptations (evil!dairy), is really what I needed to focus and make the change! Good Luck!!!

I joined a clinical study on weight loss 5 years ago which made us keep a food log. I was surprised at the amount of food I ate each day. To help me keep track of my food, vitamins, mood etc I started to use a free program at Fitday.com. Try the program for a week just to see how much you are consuming a day. The program also has graphs and reports on your progress. I now use it to keep track of other things like the amount on physical activities, fats, carbs and protein I eat each day. I am finding that my nutrients levels are going up now that I am eating more vegetables, fruit, and beans.

Perhaps I've missed something. Manxie Everything we should eat should have no added fat, as in oils. If you eat a plant-based, whole food diet without any added fats you'll be fine. Dr. McDougall suggests everything be 10% or less fat, which, except for oatmeal, which is about 12% fat, is easy to obtain eating this way. Avocados and coconut are some exceptions, as are nuts and seeds. They're all extremely high in fat, so don't eat them if you want to lose weight. Nettie

I went vegan last summer after reading several of Dr. Neal Barnard's books. I joined the last kickstart in September 2009. I lost 33 pounds in the last year, with most of it coming off after changing to a vegan diet. It was the easiest weight loss I've ever had, and never felt hungry because of all the whole nutritious food I was eating. I've been on many diets, including counting points on Weight Watchers, but no longer need to do that because of the vegan diet. The greatest benefit I've noticed since becoming vegan, is the increase energy I have. That is a huge plus!

I went from 35% body fat composition to about 21%. I'm a woman, and that is with minimal exercise. I must admit, I HATE to exercise. My diet saves me but I know I gotta work out. I was actually shocked at the numbers. That was only after about 2 months.

I switched to Vegan last November for health reasons and have lost 22 lbs. I haven't worked any exercise into my day yet, but I'm working on that.

When I was diagnosed with diabetes this past spring, and moving to a vegan diet, along with exercise has helped me lose about 60 pounds. I'm in the best shape of my life, and I no longer have to take any diabetes medicine. I think you will find that this diet, combined with exercise, will help you achieve your goals. The key is sticking to it.

Thanks for the responses. I will definitely stick to a vegan diet. I've lost another pound perhaps so I am checking my calorie count each day. Re dairy: I found I gained five pounds back that I had to take off when I went vegetarian for the holiday week. I feel so much better on a vegan diet. My new thing is to be sure that I am not overdoing the soy. I have soymilk and tempeh. I need to eat more of the giant pinto bean stew I made.

Hi all, and thanks for the great info. I have been quite frustrated about my lack of weight loss on a vegan diet. My family and I went vegan last Feb; hubby quickly lost about 15 lbs (he was hardly overweight to begin with!) and his cholesterol went down to 127! Meanwhile I have lost zip! Granted, he has always ridden his bike to work and back each day (about 9 miles total), and I do not exercise. Also, I have had lots of trouble with some parts of my diet (potato chips are vegan--oh no!!!). I now think I can see from others' posts where I have been going wrong (other than the potato chips!). We have still been consuming a fair amount of pasta (Smart Taste brand, with extra fiber, but still white); avocado (with tortilla chips--!); my neighbor's homemade hummus (I was shocked to see the amount of olive oil in that stuff!) I am about 45 pounds overweight, and would like to shed these unhealthy belly pounds. It sounds like I need to set up a different eating plan. Is anyone following the 21-day KickStart menu?

Be sure to watch and read some of the resources we are emphasizing this week about fat. We have recipes that show you how to make a delicious low-fat version of hummus. We have recipes that bake potatoes instead of frying them in oil so you can get a bit of a "potato chip" fix. Pasta is fine, just add lots of vegetables to it (frozen, fresh - whatever works!) so the fiber content is high and filling. It's great if you have the time to follow our 21-day menu to a T; all the recipes are low in fat. However, don't be afraid to adjust the foods you are used to cooking. We don't want you to get too overwhelmed. Goodness knows the possibilities in a vegan diet are endless, but there is plenty of time to make those discoveries.

I've lost a little weight plus I've shaped up a lot. I used to believe that I would always have an, ahem, shapely backside and thighs but since cutting out cheese and dairy, I've become a lot slimmer and finally feel great about the way I look. It sounds like you're taking great strides to become healthier and I wish you luck on your journey!
