How soon do new vegans see weight loss?
Posted Friday, January 1, 2010 at 1:09 PM

I have been vegan going on day 6 now! Love it! I have not had ONE digestive tract problem, and I was chronic before. My main question is I hear others say they are losing weight. I would love to lost 10 to 15 pounds being vegan? How soon should I be seeing results?

I have no idea but 10 to 15 sounds about right for me as well. I picked up a few staples this morning at the store and I am totally into this! I quit smoking so this is going to be really hard!! Wish you well on this venture!!

Just make sure that you are exercising regularly. Find cardio you enjoy doing and especially when one is vegan... Strength train. Whether you use bumbbells, resistance tubes, your own bodyweight just strength train. When you use your muscles while consuming few calories your body is going to hold on to that muscle and look to stored bodyfat for disposal!Very Happy Pretty cool, right?
As a woman I strength train regularily alternating days of using weights with my own body weight and practising pilates. And NO I am NOT Bulky and/or "muscle bound" that is an old myth that I am truly tired of hearing about! Mad

If you stick to whole foods, you should lose a pound or two a week. Whole foods include fruits, vegetables, potatoes, beans, whole grains, and spices and herbs. Nuts are a whole food too, but keep those to a handful a day or less as they are higher in calories. Stay away from added oils and processed foods (such as vegan cookies and cakes).

The good news about this weight loss is that, while it is not super fast, it is permanent.

If you stay with small portions, and stay far away from processed foods, you should easily drop about 2 pounds a week...the thing about being vegan is its VERY easy to eat too much, because you think its so "healthy". I cannot eat nuts...not at all..if I have a handful of walnuts, they seem to go right to my belly...also they seem to engage my appetite..don't stuff yourself with anything..matter how "healthy" ...small portions, non processed foods= weight loss and health. Simple equation, but sometimes not so simple to resist eating "junk" vegan foods, or simply too much food. Good luck!

I took part in the first kickoff, hoping to lose about ten pounds. I was shocked to lose six pounds in the first week, then another four during the rest of the twenty-one days. I since regained two, but that's fine. Now I'm hoping to go for another ten, which will put me right where I'd like to be.

Good luck and enjoy!

Just because you are eating a whole food plant diet does not mean you will lose weight, trust me I know. Have to keep things in balance and burn more calories than you consume. Don't eat too many starchy foods or fruit. Just a couple servings a day, and watch your fat intake, really shouldn't be higher than 30% of total daily intake but even better if you get it down to around 20%.

I know not everyone is the same but food ratios and calorie counting seem to work the best.

Because I am overweight, going on a vegan diet resulted in a loss of 6 lbs the first week. I reduced the amount of salt in my diet, which meant that I no longer retained water and that may have been why I lost so much weight the first week. On average, you should lose from about 0.5lb to one lb /week. The heavier you are to begin with, the more you will lose. Your age and physical activity also plays a part in weight loss so start walking 30 minutes a day if you can. I joined the Kickstart program because I wanted to learn how to eat a more healthy diet for life and the weight loss is an added bonus.

If you're trying to lose weight avoid eating fats. Eating starchy foods do NOT make you fat. Your body is MEANT to run on starches, for pete's sake. They just make your body very efficient and any fat you eat with them will be stored - your body is meant to do that. Fat = energy. If you have extra fat on your body you're not going to use that fat as energy if you're also supplementing your diet with fat. Elimiate fat from your diet and your body will use your stored fat - get it? It really is that simple. Avoid fat (oils, nuts, avocados, olives, seeds, seed and nut butters), avoid processed sugars or sugary foods (like candy!), eat lots of fiber/whole grains to help slow down sugar spikes, and WALK. That's it. It IS that simple.

Hey JenDiggity, Chill out toots...there are people out there trying to help themselves and they have questions. I'm going thru menopause and weight loss is a bitch and I'm only 44. I think anyone that at least gives this a try is doing something great for themselves!!! However I must agree, get moving! Walk, run, bike, just get off your ass!! I just started doing a cardio dance workout with my ipod, we're now best friends. Strap that thing on and just boogie to the beat, my husband, kid and everyone that drives by thinks I'm crazy but do I care? NO! This is my year to look & feel great!

Thanks!

It's a lot of fun and it doesn't matter if you mess up because you're in charge! Good luck and have a blast!

Check out Dr. Fuhrman's books "Eat to Live," and "Eat for Health." Both are really good for fast weight loss.

I read Skinny Bitch about eight weeks ago, and the The Kind Diet about five weeks ago. I had 32lbs to loose when I started and I lost about three pounds a week for the first five weeks... I've stalled the last few weeks but I attribute that to three things...

As of about three weeks ago I;

a) had only 17lbs left to loose
b) Christmas holidays came around and I was drinking more wine
c) I've gotten a little lazy and have been eating more vegan convenience foods and fewer fresh veggies and grains (Amy's frozen pizza, Phil's frozen buritos, etc...)

We have done many clinical trials at PCRM where we asked people to eat all they wanted of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains (no portion control) but being mindful of fat (no nuts, no added oils) and the glycemic index (avoiding foods that turn quickly to sugar in the blood such as, you guessed it, sugar, processed white flour, juice, etc.). For more on glycemic index go here: http://www.nutritionmd.org/nutrition_tips/nutrition_tips_understand_foods/gi.html.

The results were the same again and again: consistent weight loss at about 1 to 2 pounds per week. This was always done with no change in exercise.

If you need to lose weight, the high-fiber, low-fat aspects of this way of eating will bring about the results you want to see. You can find more information here: http://www.nutritionmd.org/nutrition_tips/nutrition_tips_lose_weight/weight.html.

I'm unable to access the recommended web address. I've tried two different servers.

Unless there was a problem with our server at that moment, I'm not sure the reason the site couldn't be uploaded. I'm able to access the sites from my home computer. I hope the trouble has passed.

Clicking the link Susan posted does not work because the l at the end of the address was not linked, but if the address is copied and pasted into the browser, it should work. This link should also work: http://www.nutritionmd.org/nutrition_tips/nutrition_tips_lose_weight/weight.html
