replacing steamed milk in my coffee
Posted Friday, January 1, 2010 at 3:01 PM

I'm a vegetarian interested in switching to a vegan diet. I drink lots of coffee/lattes. I heat my milk & then add my coffee. I've tried soy, almond & rice milk & the Silk coffee creamer but I don't like any of them. I've tried drinking my coffee black but that's not for me. Recently I saw a vegan product online that's supposed to be great in coffee but I can't remember the name of it. Any suggestions? I'm going to try a powdered vegetarian creamer that I saw at Whole Foods & use it while I follow the 21 Vegan Kickstart. But if I can find the right milk substitute so I can still enjoy my coffee I think I can easily give up all animal products. I'm going to try to drink more green tea & maybe that will help end my coffee addiction! Anyone else a coffee drinker that finds it hard to give up milk/cream/dairy creamers?

i heat my soymilk for coffee too--but i had to learn to like it! (at first i used the vanilla silk brand, and now i just use whole foods or trader joe's unsweetened soymilk.) starbucks has a sweetened soymilk that they'll substitute for you. Smile

there's a vegan creamer called mimic creme i bought for a guest over thanksgiving. it was a hit with her. http://mimiccreme.com/

silk brand also makes one, but if you don't like their soymilk you might not like that either.

online vegan stores can be good for research--even if you don't order from them you know what to look for in your local stores. they know their stuff, and customers can rate products. (not necessarily all *healthy* products, but they're all vegan.) here are a few:

vegan essentials: http://veganessentials.com/

cosmo's vegan shoppe: http://cosmosveganshoppe.com/

pangea vegan store: http://www.veganstore.com/

vegan.com's amazon store: http://astore.amazon.com/vegancommini-20?_encoding=UTF8&node=0

Thanks Shanna, I'm going to follow up on all of your suggestions...Pangea might be where I saw the creamer substitute I read about...I will give all a try...glad you developed a taste for Soymilk. Maybe there is hope for me too! Happy Healthy New Year

I have trouble with that transition too. I use half and half in my coffee. It will probably be the last thing to go.

I would recommend the Silk soy or coconut milk creamers, plain (not the flavors). Smile

Caroline I think milk in my coffee will be the last thing to go for me too. Ice Cream, cereal with milk & glasses of milk & yogurt are the other dairy things that I love but I like the substitutes I've found for them.

DianeJ, I've never tried the plain soymilk or the coconut creamers but I'll try them. So far everything except for milk separates or curdles when I heat it or add it to coffee.

Starfish, yes, when I first went off dairy, I had the same problem, the regular soy milks seem to curdle. But the Silk "creamers" will not do that. I am very particular about my coffee, and I quickly adapted to the soy creamer. However, as I said before, I was using quite a bit each day and in trying to cut down on processed soy, I have gone to the one made with coconut milk which is fine. On the curdling thing, though, I make an awesome chai, or green tea latte, using tea bags, and a cup of half water, half regular soy or almond milk, heated first in the microwave, and it does not curdle. But early on, I tried that with the soy milk, heating first, for coffee and something just wasn't right. Confused

maybe that's the trick. i also heat my soymilk (whole foods unsweetened organic or trader joe's ditto) in the microwave (30 seconds) before i put the coffee in. it doesn't separate or curdle. as a bonus, my cup is warm. (and when it's 27 degrees out, that's awesome.)

it also seems to depend on the brand. whatever soymilk they use at starbucks (which i've not seen in stores) doesn't separate or curdle. but the one they have at my local coffee shop does separate unless you stir it frequently. it looks a little weird, but it tastes fine anyway!

I was so happy to see this post because it's really the last hitch for me going vegan. I used to work at Peet's Coffee here in California, and they have a soy milk that's made especially for espresso drinks. I don't know what the difference is exactly.

I hate the taste of all the store soy creamers, but I'm thinking of maybe mixing half milk and half soy to start and gradually increase the soy.

This was a big issue for me in going vegan also. I love milk in my coffee, although I don't heat it before adding. I now use Blue Diamond Almond Breeze, vanilla flavored and unsweetened. The "unsweetened" part is very important to me as I have a problem with sugar. I believe it's a totally vegan product, and I have finally found a way to enjoy my coffee again with "cream!"

I use Blue Diamond Almond Breeze (original, so it has some sweetness) in my coffee and I've never looked back since. It's never curdled (like some soymilk), and it's thick enough to give me the same consistency that milk did.

Just re-read the posts & I'm craving coffee!! Going to Wholefoods in the morning & Starbucks...I know that one of the suggestions will work for me & I'm going to try Chai also. Good luck to everyone trying Vegan for the first time ...this is a great way to begin 2010.

man, I LOVE silk's original soy creamer....Can't help you there. I'd say try it until you learn to love it? Rolling Eyes

One more thing(boy, are we into our coffee or what!). For those that have not tried it, the soy latte at Starbucks rocks! Even though I drink unsweetened coffee, and this is just a tad sweet(due to the special soymilk they use), it is really good! Also, if you're still around, to you guys who were using the Almond Breeze in your coffee, do you heat it first, or just pour like creamer? Very Happy

I know!!! Trying a Soy Latte tomorrow at Starbucks, defininetly & asking them what kind of soy milk they use (if I like it) & I'm going to buy the Blue Diamond Almond milk, heat it in the microwave, then add my coffee. Besides caring about coffee too much I also watch Brothers & Sisters (yikes :!Smile & it's starting now. To be continued...

I'm a tea drinker from England originally so I am used to tea with milk, the "proper" way. However, as a straight milk (Rather then creamer) substitute, I like (or have learned to like!) Westsoy unsweetened organic soymilk which only has 2 ingredients, water and Soybeans.

Hi DianeJ, no I've never heated up the Almond Breeze before adding it to my coffee but it's definitely worth a try, eh? Smile

I've found that coconut creamers are the thickest and the best for coffee. They have them at Whole Foods.
I can't do soymilk, it really bothers me. That's all that my neighborhood coffee shop offers. However, I bought a big container of rice milk, put my name on it and my coffee shop is keep it for me in their fridge and using it when I come by for my latte every morning. They've been very supportive.
