Low protein for vegan diet
Posted Friday, January 1, 2010 at 9:46 PM

My nutritionist insists on my getting 45 grams of protein each day, I noticed that the diet has almost half that amount. Do you have any advice? Rolling Eyes

Click on Resources in the top yellow bar. There is a section on protein in the FAQ that will help.

Are you using the nutritional counts for one serving of each recipe? Most of the time, you probably eat more than that, and I think you'll easily get 45 grams a day. Just a cup of beans has a third of that. See http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/protein.html

Yikes. I'd question your nutritionist about where he or she is keeping up with modern research on protein. I had a nutritionist recently tell me I should go ahead and check out the Atkins diet! Unfortunately there's so much info out there it's hard to wade through it all. The info in the resources on this site (resources tab - FAQ - first topic) is good. If you are eating enough plant-base foods to feel full and are including whole grains in your diet, you are likely getting plenty of protein. Don't sweat it! If you're really concerned, eat some extra beans!

You can very easily get 45 grams of protein in one day on a vegan diet, without even thinking about it. 1 cup of black beans alone has 16 grams of protein.

Low protein for vegan diet

A vegan diet is not low protein. It is normal or optimal protein. On the other hand, a diet with animal foods of any kind is high protein, which is toxic for your liver and kidneys that have to get rid of the excess nitrogen in all that protein.

Too much protein also raises your body's level of a growth factor called IGF-1. This growth factor encourages the proliferation of cancer.

Too much protein is no better than too much salt or sugar. Please question what your nutritionist is telling you. Plants and microbes are the only beings on earth that make essential amino acids. No animal can make essential amino acids. Animal protein is nothing but recycled plant protein. Just eat your fill of a variety of whole plant foods, and you will not have to worry about protein at all.
