Veganism and arthritis
Posted Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 5:30 PM
I heard that the golfer, Phil Mickelson, went on a vegetarian diet because he has been diagnosed with arthritis. Is this only for the form of arthritis he has or will eating a vegan diet help anyone with arthritis? (Not that I'm old enough to have arthritis....I'm asking for a friend) My doctor suggested a cortison shot for my thumb because it's become extremely painful. The shot helped a bit but I'm wondering if there are really foods that could help and probably foods that weren't good for me.

Vegan diets have proven very successful for arthritis, i.e., joint inflammation. Please read more here: http://www.nutritionmd.org/health_care_providers/bone_joint_diseases/arthritis_nutrition.html.

I am relatively young (okay, 47) and was diagnosed with arthritis several years ago. My doctor recommended that I go on an anti-inflammatory diet, which essentially is as close to a vegan diet as you can get. I first cut out all red meat and most dairy. That was about 3 years ago. I started to feel better. Then, about 1 year ago I cut out all meat including fish and chicken, and immediately had more improvement of symptoms. The last piece was to cut out dairy and eggs, but that has been difficult. This 21 day program will help me go the rest of the way to where I need to be. I have come to believe that for me, a diet as close to vegan as possible is the way to go. There is a lot of information on-line about anti-inflammatory diets, and some of it is contradictory. But if you read it carefully you will find that the common theme is to reduce or eliminate animal products, increase plant based foods, and increase omega-3 sources.

Debbie, I started a vegan diet in March. I've had confirmed arthritis in both of my knees since I was 36. I do take supplements for it. Two weeks into the diet, all of my inflammation was gone. It's not that I don't still have it, I just don't feel the effects. I think it dairy, because I was never a very big meat eater, although I used to eat a lot of yogurt and cheese.

I am excited to see how eating this way will help my arthritis. I hope to have the same results and not have the pain that I've had in my thumb. I only see good things happening from eating this way!!

Thanks for the link! I had heard about nightshade (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant) and I knew that dairy and meat contributed, but I didn't know about corn, oats, and citrus. I would appear I need to do some more eliminating. I have been eating a lot more tomatoes as the garden is growing. One of my favorite snacks is a baked potato eaten like an apple. So between the potatoes and tomatoes, I need to find subs. I could try a sweet potato instead, but not sure what to sub out the tomatoes with.
