OH NO!!! COOKOUT AT WORK WED!!!
Posted Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 8:00 PM
So basically an email went out last week that we would be doing an end of summer cookout this Wed. However the email didn't get sent to me!! UGGGHHH!! A little background...I have been practicing a vegetarian diet for about a year now. This is a new job & they already treat me like im a freak for not eating meat. So they are going to be grilling some morning star veggie grillers for me & the couple other people. BUT they grillers are not vegan...since I am doing the challenge I can't eat them. Regularly I would eat them. I don't want to seem ungrateful. Any thoughts????

Oh my. I admire your dedication to the three weeks! Well, how about offering to bring a new brand you thought people might like? Or tofu dogs for something different - ad addition, not a replacement, to their generous offerings.

Awwhh Thanks!! Yes that is a great idea!!! I did just buy a pack of vegan hotdogs. I could bring those...but they wanted us to bring a side dish since they are supplying hamburger (real & vegetarian) & real hot dogs. I guess I will figure out what to bring & only eat the veggie burger if the boss is looking...lol

Eeek! Tricky situation for you, for sure. Susan's idea is a good one if this is workable for you, although the food is probably already purchased for the cookout (tomorrow, right?). It's unfortunate you didn't learn of the cookout sooner so you could have approached the organizers about buying vegan fare. What else is being served? I'm sure you don't want to appear ungrateful that the organizer of the food is at least willing to buy what s/he thinks is appropriate for you to eat. What's in the grillers that makes them un-vegan? Egg? Dairy? You will have to decide how much you want to bend on the issue. It's so much easier to stick to the plan when it's strictly on our terms, but when others are involved (like new workmates!) I wouldn't beat yourself up if you choose to eat a griller tomorrow. Let us know how it goes!

Well the side items will be things that people bring in. Pot Luck style so it could be anything. Most of I probably won't be able to eat if it is regular BBQ sides...mac & cheese, baked beans, coleslaw, etc. The grillers have egg whites in them & caseinate. I think I need to strive for perfection but allow for minor situations like this one. Because if I don't eat it then I prob won't be able to eat anything else... They like to eat a lot at this place...hoping there are no more group food events...at least until after my three weeks.

At my office we are having a potluck in a week. I am going to bring something that I will eat. I have discovered that if you quietly just go about eating what you can, or even bring something that you will eat, you will get by. If you have to take a couple bitty portions of something, shove it around your plate, but don't eat it. Have some stuff at your desk/office for survival. Luckily for me, I've just developed the rep of being the healthy eater. I never make any comments about my eating choices or anyone elses. The less you say the better. Also, one of my favorite tricks is when someone offers you something you don't want to eat, put a hand on your stomach and say, "Oh, I just can't." They will assume you are too full. No sense telling them any differently.

Morningstar's Grillers Chick'n are vegan! I even checked with the manufacturer to be sure. I don't know if that helps or not.

Yeah they are making the burgers & not the chik'n...the burgers have specific ones that are vegan.

I know they all think I am a crackpot here too ... I just eat what I can and ignore what I can't. It's really a pain, isn't it?

I am lucky in the sense that most know I have Celiac as well as being veg... so now no one even tries to feed me. I just suggest I will bring something and I do, a few dishes in fact. Whatever I bring normally gets inhaled, if only so they could say, "I could never eat like that!" In the book "Gluten-Free Vegan" there is a recipe for a Mexican Quinoa Salad. It is demolished where ever I take it. I will post it sometime this week, time permitting.

I haven't even said anything about doing my vegan challenge right now. Wouldn't want to start a riot...lol
My thing is I am not one of the people who says or analyzes the meat eaters food & ask a lot of questions or judge them...then don't judge me...yah know

I brought my vegan cheese slice from home & added it & it was good. I'm SO glad that they said it wrong.

Some of us have to project the words "deadly poison" in front of our eyes in that situation of grave danger! I remember my daughter dying of cancer, and Dr. Esselsyn's picture of the lining of the artery being dissolved by the cheese oil/cholesterol and our poor white blood cells sacrificing their lives to frantically gobble up those invaders to save our lives. We must love ourselves more and nurture ourselves with something that will not kill our body parts! I try to have almond cream or avocado on hand and eat that kind of good fat every day so I have something inside of me that helps me feel nutured so I don't succumb to the smell of pizza, french fries or other things grilled. Smelling pizza leads to a psychological and physiological response with those chemicals signaling our brain and body that something good's coming up! as Dr. Barnard writes in his book, "Breaking the Food Seduction". We are retraining our bodies to have 'another' good coming up: a smoothie containing blueberries, bananas and almond cream, or avocado and sliced tomato, sauerkraut and dulse(one of my favorite oily bites), etc. We are helping each other survive! Everyone else's thoughts are very valuable helps: especially the one about just keeping one's mouth shut and just pushing stuff around on the plate but not eating it. We need to be social and not make other's feel uncomfortable in their choices in this party situation. In the future, in a different situation, people will ask you about your choices, and then is the time to explain. People don't want to be 'taught' while they are eating. They just want to enjoy without guilt!

Unfortunately, there will always be the ones that have comment or actions, and can be quite mean. If we are doing something different, then that makes one of us wrong, right? I wish people could get past that idea. No,it doesn't make anyone wrong. It means we are on different paths that lead to the same place. We all have 2 things in common. Birth and death. How we handle the middle part is what makes us different. I choose to live the middle with kindness, towards animals, the planet and myself.

There is a wonderful program called Healing with the Masters that is right on that subject: It will be available for 24 hours and Guy's message speaks exactly to what you are sharing: REPLAY LINK: http://www.healingwiththemasters.com/audio.htm (how to get past this he is doing one thing and I'm doing another so one of us must be wrong)

I know I have been around some vegan/vegetarians that preach to people & put them down for what they do or eat. I am NOT one of those kinds of people so I don't like to be treated that way for choosing to not eat it. The way you put it is EXACTLY right & I totally agree.
