Butter Substitute, Please
Posted Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 6:00 PM
I am new to vegan cooking and reading the comments from you guys has been really helpful! I live in The Bahamas, so not only are the special vegan products pricey, finding some of them is a challenge. My husband is my motivation for joining in with this vegan kickstart plan. He is a cancer survivor, and has been wanting to go vegan for months. So, I told him I will start out with him, and see how it goes for me after the 21 days. One of my husband's biggest challenges is getting a decent butter substitute. If anyone can give me a really good substitute (for use on toast, grits, etc), I will really appreciate it. Thanks. BTW, I tried the veggieburger patties from NutritionMD today. There were great!

Earth Balance makes a pretty good 'butter' spread that is vegan. http://www.earthbalancenatural.com

Earth Balance gets my vote too. Delicious and vegan. I use the original.

I like Earth Balance too. It comes in tubs but also in cubes which are great for baking.

Also, try Smart Balance Organic- it's a little easier to find cause it's a better known brand, and the organic version is vegan.

Thanks for the helpful responses. I'll write back with my husband's response after he tries whichever I bring from the supermarket.

Smart Balance Light with flax oil is vegan. It has less than half the saturated fats of Earth Balance. It depends on how often and much you use. I use the Smart Balance on toast.

I am glad to find out that Smart balance with Flax oil is vegan. That gives another option and that is always nice. Especially since Smart balance is on most grocery store shelves.
