Stress Eating
Posted Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 8:52 AM

I've been following the vegan tenents happily! Yesterday was the first day of work and a boat load of stress arrived. No food satisfied me! I kept to vegan choices but I ate a bunch. I was almost ready to eat the kitchen cabinets thinking, "Well, they should have lots of fiber!" Rolling Eyes Any suggestions for emotional eating ???

I feel you. I went to a cruise not too long ago, and I just wanted to eat everything one night- while my friend, just ate soooo slow, so little, so peacefully- he was in full control of what he ate. I just looked at him in awe and said "Wow.. I want that.."

I don't want food to be "a psychological thing", as I realized it can be. It's so wild how we use food to help our mood, instead of -to nourish our bodies. I am learning to chew slower, to scan my emotions and eat when I am more calm and centered, and become more aware.

It's a daily process. I've realized that even eating healthy vegan food, can have its downfall if we overeat and/or are emotionally eating. Eating raw helps- it forces me to chew more, I feel I get more vitamins in in my food and end up eating less. Being aware helps most.

We can do it!!

Hey Acheselka,

I hear you. And I can reassure you, there are probably a couple of things going on here. Actually, perhaps 3.

First, the "fullness" that comes from a high fiber, low fat, plant - based diet is different than the "full" of the SAD. Your satiety will come from nutrition, bulk in the belly (a combination of fiber and water weight, which is why cardboard won't cut it! After a short time, you will recognize this new satiety and be able to eat your fill without feeling toxic overload.

Next, when eating this way, I find over and over again than people aren't eating enough. We're used to portion sizes, helpings, and all the calorie controls that actually need to be in place in the SAD. The playing field is now different. Eat! Quite possibly more often than you have been before. And don't make the mistake of translating "the size of a deck of cards" servings to the brown rice on your plate. Think more like heaped on half your plate. A big one at that. See My Big Plate Trick for Staying Trim

When you start eating enough, and on time, you take care of a big chunk of what we thought of previously as "emotional" eating. I know this from experience. Trust me. (I used to weight 50 lbs more than I do now).

Finally, food and eating are quick and easy ways to change our mood and consciousness. That's where we need to get creative. And the high fat, high sugar edibles that parade as food all over our society are particularly alluring because of the power they have to rapidly shift our biochemistry (see Dr. Barnard's Breaking the Food Seduction and Doug Lisle's The Pleasure Trap - they are actually quite comforting reads!)

Stress eating is a tough one!

I find if I can eat slowly it helps a lot, but I have noticed that stress sort of speeds everything up including the eating. For me, the best way to deal with stress is to actually try to prevent it from happening in the first place by slowing down my pace outside of eating.

This means changing plans a lot (like deciding NOT to do something that I thought I wanted to do or felt I had to get done TODAY)... or if you are more proactive then make sure your schedule does not include to many "to do"s.

Also, I remind myself to employ that "I have time" vacation type mentality with whatever I am working on or with whomever I am interacting with...I am so much happier and efficient when I do this...and it applies to the eating too.

Slow = peace for me! Smile

Also I try to make sure to I am getting the sleep I need! My days are much nicer when I am well-rested.

Good luck to you!

Count me in on stress eating. Just in the last few months, I relocated, lost my 15-year-old dog, and started working 2 new jobs. Now I am living out of my comfort zone, working 2 jobs, etc...... I do fair but when I walk through the door at the end of Job #1, I don't even have to be hungry. I start looking for something to eat. And lots of it. I doesn't help that I am hypoglycemic as well. I find cherry tomatoes are a wonderful thing because I can eat them by the handful. Though I have read that nightshade vegetables should be avoided if you have arthritis. So...maybe we can just all help each other with ideas?

Wait ... back up the truck! Lani, did I just read that I can load up on things like brown rice and still lose weight, or are my eyes and brain deceiving me?

I am so used to limiting my carbs ...

You can load up within reason! That doesn't mean you can have 4 cups every day. But yes, eating a low-fat plant-based diet means eating MORE FOOD than you're used to. Smile Smile Smile

So I am looking forward to the scratch and sniff...only thing better would be afforded the chance to have someone make all this yumminess for me so I can try it out!
