Eczema worse??
Posted Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 7:14 PM

So it's been 2 days since I started the Kick Start and now my eczema is actually worse. Does anyone know why that might be?? I thought for sure cutting dairy out would help. Confused

Never heard of it. Could it be fluke? As in, unrelated to the new way of eating. After all, it's only been two days? Could something else be setting it off perhaps?

I really hope it's a fluke because it's A LOT worse. Rolling Eyes I'm pretty sure it's not peanuts/peanut butter causing it because I cut that out of my diet for 2 months a couple of years ago and it didn't help at all. I hope it's not soy but I guess it could be... I have had soy products both days, but I ate a decent amount of soy before (I was an ovo-lacto vegetarian). I guess I'll give it awhile longer and hope for the best. Confused

The McDougall Plan has an elimination diet that's low-fat vegan, and that might help you figure out the cause. I'm so sorry you're having such a rough time!

I hope you can pin down what it is. I just can't imagine it is veganism per se that is the root cause. I, too, am sorry that you're having this discomfort!

Mommyof2nc - I'm not sure if this applies, but I know when I went Vegan eight weeks ago I noticed my mild excema seemed to get a little worse. It may have been the season (dryer winter weather in in Texas) but I think that it's actually that I'm eating a lot less grease and fat. My face used to get pretty oil by afternoon no matter what skin products I used, and since I've stopped eating meat etc... it doesn't. I'm no expert (by any stretch) but you may want to try upping your good fats (avocados, olive oil, etc... Confused

Hi there,

I've had eczema on and off for many years and I've found that it gets worse if I'm eating more sugar/refined grain, or if I'm more acidic in general, or if I'm constipated-even a little bit. Colon buildup/toxins are usually the main cause of this. You may not realize that you are constipated, but could be. Green juicing helps a LOT, plus cutting out the refined grain, and even cutting back on whole grain also for awhile. Peace!

Two things come to mind: Gluten sensitivity, by eliminating meat you may unwittingly be eating more grains that contain gluten. Also, anytime we make a major dietary change for the better our livers begin to detox, which can make certain conditions temporarily worse. You could add some milk thistle supplement so as to help ease your detox symptoms and drink plenty of water to keep your system flushing. The other poster who mentioned constipation makes a good point, in that if toxins are dumping and if they have no way to be eliminated you would notice more severe symptoms.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I was kind of thinking it might be a sort of detoxing thing, so hopefully that's it and it'll get better. I haven't been eating any sweets or refined foods, so I know that's not it. Never thought about a gluten sensitivity - I guess that'll be my next experiment with my diet if the eczema doesn't clear up.

could be that you are also getting less fat in your diet... try adding some flaxseed oil, almond oil, sesame seed oil, olive oils ... drink plenty of good quality water as this will help flush out the toxins that are obviously trying to escape. Oh even the supplements for omega 3 may be useful. I think it might be a healing crisis... like getting worse before it gets better... are you stressed about anything as this can make eczema worse?

I have noticed the same reaction when I drastically cut calories in the past, or dont get enough sleep, or drink wine (which dehydrates me)...all those things seem to make psoriasis worse. I can only assume eczema would react in a similar way. The reduction of calories, oils and hydration show up quickly. Drink lots more water and add some healthy fats in small amounts. Good luck

I really think it's a detox effect because I was also having a headache every day and that's gone away as of yesterday. The eczema got much worse but it's slowly improving now and I did add a little olive oil to my diet and have been drinking lots of water also, so hopefully the worst is over now.

Thanks again for all the replies and suggestions!

I found eliminating gluten made a huge difference in my ezcema. It was like night and day! I would highly recomend eliminating gluten. After years of trying so many things, this is the ONE thing that worked for me
