Tahini?
Posted Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 9:40 AM

I'm not able to find "tahini" in any health food store or store with in 100 miles. I live out-state! Is there something that would make an useable replacement and still be as low fat?

Tahini is not low fat. Depending on the recipe, I might just skip it. For example, if it's for hummus, I would skip it and add more lemon.

You can use peanut butter in hummus, too - just not nearly as much, unless you want it to taste like peanut butter Wink. It helps give it a little smoother texture. More often than not, though, if I'm out of tahini, I just leave it out.

I grind up sesame seeds in my Vitamix and use these when making hummus. It should work for other recipes as well.

Thank you, yes I wanted to make Hummus. If I don't use tahini it will be less fat. Thank you again.

Did you check out Rip Esselstyn recipe for low fat hummus? Just saw it myself.

Rip's Oil-Free, Low-Fat Hummus

1 can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2-3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon Bragg Liquid Aminos or low-sodium tamari
3 tablespoons water or vegetable broth

Blend all the ingredients into a thick paste, using a small amount of water as necessary to achieve desired consistency.
