Need Advice For Staying On The Kickstart
Posted Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 10:02 PM

Hi everyone,
I've been following the kickstarts for a while and was really excited to hear about this one. But I'm running into a lot of problems that are just frustrating me.

Right now I'm in the process of making a big move to another country. My parents and aunt have come out here to help me. While I am grateful for their support and help, they are also very suffocating and clinging. They are not native English speakers, though my parents speak English just fine (my aunt doesn't speak it at all) so I guess that's the reason. Anyway, my mom and aunt are staying with me and basically have taken over the kitchen. My mom insists on cooking everything for me and I hardly get a chance to get into the kitchen to cook something for myself (she's a Jewish mother so it would be almost an insult to refuse Smile). I have no problem with that, as she respects my desire to be vegan, but she doesn't exactly cook low fat and she is one of these who believes that you can't absorb the vitamins in veggies without adding olive oil.

I am trying my best to make this as low fat as possible. For example, I tell her to leave olive oil out of my portion of salad she makes every morning and I just add lemon juice. I got her to make the hummus she usually makes with a lot less tehina than she usually does and I stay away from the fried goodies she makes for my brother. But sometimes it gets frustrating, especially since she tends to buy a lot of junk food to nibble on in the evenings.

Any advice as to how I can stay as close to the Kickstart as possible during this time?

Tam

Sounds like you are doing the best you can in an unusual situation.

If you are adamant about sticking as close as possible to the plan I would suggest making your own food and keeping it as simple as possible with the plan's four food groups.

If it would lead to a LOT more peace in your home during this temporary arrangement then perhaps the "KickStart" plan would be best saved for when you are out of this situation. You can still plan ahead for when you are more free to control your food environment and you can still try to practice it as often as possible right now but don't feel down about not closely adhering to it during this time.

"Life is a series of adjustments" or "this too shall change." Wink

Best of luck!

I agree. Do the best you can in this situation. But I will say from experience, sometimes a little reality check for family is a good thing right up front. When you politely assert your right to do what you think is best for your health, loved ones learn you mean business. They do learn! When they see how you change physically and mentally, maybe they will be inspired to put themselves first more often as well.

It's an interesting human reaction to people choosing to take care of themselves. Whether it's someone choosing not to smoke in a group of smokers, not to drink in a group of drinkers, or to eat well when others choose a different path, it strikes a chord. But I don't think we can be held back by those reactions.

I often compare my decision not to eat certain things to people's dietary choices because of allergies or religious doctrine. One woulnd't be offended if a Muslim or Jewish person didn't eat pork at a meal. I think people who avoid foods for health (or ethical, or environmental) reasons should be just as respected.
