Age & Weight loss

I'm a 67 year old Vegan for almost two years and have not been able to lose weight. I know it sounds crazy, however the only time I'm able to lose is when I have about 1000 cal or less per day. I've also tried to stay away from any kind of oil due to attempts at reversing cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, I like to exercise and on the days that I do, my appetite is not quelled with 1000 calories. Any thoughts anyone?

Hi. 1000 cals per day is an awfully low amount. Add in exercise, and it is little wonder you would feel hungry. I'd be famished!

I'm 51. Like you, I have a hard time dropping weight. My difficulties are a slowed metabolism due to hypothyroidism, taking a beta blocker for a heart condition, and (and here's the biggest contributor) many, many years of binging and then going on one diet after another. My metabolism is really screwed-up.

My nutritionist has made me agree to never diet again and to eat three realistic meals each day with one or two light snacks (total @1500-1700 cals). I made her agree that I could try a low-fat vegan approach to eating. I try to space meals out by at least 3 hours. I've recently added in 45-60 mins of exercise per day (not all at once--two sessions to spike the metabolic rate). I'm beginning to notice some firming. The scale hasn't budged yet, and that depresses me. So, I'm staying away from the scale! I'd rather go by the fit of my clothes.

In short, why not try eating a bit more? Perhaps that will help you spike your metabolism AND give you the energy to keep up your exercise schedule.

Forget about calories, eat less processed starches like bread and pasta, and more greens, other veggies, fruits and beans. And keep moving. Smile

Dr. Barnard just posted a tip about that the other day:

That's an interesting formula. So if you wanted to weigh 135 lbs you would eat 1350 calories? That's not really alot if you are active in cardio. I think increasing the cardio is the secret for me and also drinking water. I noticed I tend to drop weight more readily if I force myself to drink the standard 8 glasses a day. Unfortunately this is really quite a task for me especially in the cold New Englad winter!

He says eat "at least" that many calories not limit yourself to that amount. My understanding is if you go too low you can really mess up your metabolism.
